"Surgeon of the forest" brings horse logging operation to Ely

There are certain things you'd expect at a winter horse logging camp. Satellite TV and a laptop computer weren't on the list.

Set up 12 miles from Ely, the Cedar River Horse Logging crew was busy Wednesday cutting, hauling and milling trees into what will one day be a home and a barn in the woods.

For every horse there was a chainsaw and just as the stovepipes released smoke from the wood stoves in each tent, the satellite dish on the horse trailer was hard to miss.

There were no skidders, no feller-bunchers, no delimbers, just horses and believe it or not, a Bobcat skid-steer, for moving logs on the landing....
