Campground at Red River State Recreation Area to reopen May 13
(Released April 28, 2011)

The opening of seasonal facilities at Red River State Recreation Area (SRA) in East Grand Forks plans will be delayed as cleanup continues following the 2011 Red River flood, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).Anticipated opening dates include:

May 13 for the park’s 85 full-service campsites (the 17 rustic sites at Sherlock Park Campground may be open sooner than that, but campers should call ahead to check on their availability)
May 21 for the River Heights Trailhead, which contains three picnic shelters (two of which can be reserved), and a modern restroom
mid- to late May for the Red Lake public water access, which is underwater currently.
“Heavy flooding again this spring is making for extra cleanup,” said Park Manager Gladwin Lynne, “but fortunately the park didn’t sustain major damage.” The recreation area was designed to withstand high water and frequent flood events.

As the flood waters recede, work crews are picking up refuse, removing logs and other debris, replacing electrical structures and readying the campground, boat access and picnic area for park visitors.
