OHV Recreation Management Workshop set for southeastern Minnesota June 9-11
(Released May 19, 2011)

Registrations are being accepted for the Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Recreation Management Workshop at the Community Center in Houston, Minn., June 9-11.

The workshop is being presented by the National Off-Highway Vehicle Conservation Council (NOHVCC) and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The workshop is designed to bring together OHV enthusiasts, community and business stakeholders, government agency personnel, and other trail-related stakeholders to discuss best management practices for managing sustainable motorized recreation in local communities.

Indoor and field sessions led by topic experts will cover trail design, maintenance, monitoring, and signing; the benefits trails bring to communities; building effective partnerships; trails and environmental protection; what enthusiasts are looking for, and much more. Many of the principles covered will also apply to natural surface hiking, mountain bike and equestrian trails.

During the field session, participants will walk potential trails in the Houston area and learn to apply best management practices and design techniques, including what works and what does not work for sustainability.

Participants can sign up for the entire workshop or for Saturday only. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Continental breakfast, lunch and snacks will be served all three days of the workshop. Registration is $50 for all three days or $20 for Saturday only.

Visit the NOHVCC website for registration and additional workshop details.

The Explore Minnesota website has information on local businesses providing lodging and evening meals. Alternate accommodations are available for the field sessions for people with mobility disabilities.

NOHVCC is a 501(c) (3) educational nonprofit organization whose mission is to further a positive future for responsible OHV recreation.

A team of stakeholders and organizations assisted NOHVCC and the DNR with the planning and creation of the workshop. They include the city of Houston and Houston County, the Houston area business community, the All-Terrain Vehicle Association of Minnesota, the Amateur Riders Motorcycle Association, and the Minnesota 4-Wheel Drive Association.
