Grand Rapids, leech lake fishing report
May,18th 2011

Opening of fishing season finally made it, it seemed like a long spring this year. We opened on  Leech lake this year after 40 years of opening on Cass lake quite a change for most of our party. The fishing was great on Saturday. Most fish were caught around the rocks by sugar point and battle point in the morning then we headed toward federal dam in the afternoon and caught a bunch in the sand. Sunday was a bit tough seemed like the fish just disappeared  on the spots we caught them on the day before and we had to look hard to find a fish Sunday. Most fish were caught on a 1/8 oz fireball or a gumball  made by northland tackle, tipped with a shiner or a chub.

Winnie was another good lake we been fishing the east side in the Tamarac bay area. Mostly in the 8-10 ft of water  with 1/8 oz gumballs and fireballs. They have been fishing in front of high banks, stoney and ravens also.  The shiners are really starting to move in right now with some of this warmer weather so the fishing should just keep getting better.

Most bait shops up here have a ample supply of shiners and we shouldn’t have any problem getting them for awhile.

Good luck fishing
