Kid#1 and myself are planning an epic deer hunt.  She had so much fun fishing on an unpresured wilderness lake she wants to try hunting in the same way.  We are planning on canoeing to the back side of the same lake and hunting land that gets very little hunting pressure if any at all.  We have already started scouting on google earth and will hit the ground in the next month.
There are no logging roads within 2 miles.  We have found 4 good looking funnels and entered the gps coordiates into my hand held gps.

Has anyone else done this?

Used to do this in Canada to a certain extent. Follow the lay of the land and find corridors and funnels off the beaten path. We would walk river bottoms and mountain tops and find the places that the deer would travel to and from areas, be it bedding, water or food and then hang our stands adjacent to them. We would mark trails off the main roads and then put tiny reflective markers for coming in and out under the cover of darkness. Lots of work but as you said, very little hunting pressure and the chance at some good deer. Big timber hunting is always a challenge. Stay safe though and always know where you are in relation to where you started. Spare batteries for GPS, old fashioned compass (of course knowing how to use it) and of course tell loved ones and provide them a map of the area. Don't know how deep your going, but I always made sure someone would know where I was. My .02 cents.
Going South......in a manner of speaking!

That is the one negative to owning my own hunting property.  I never get to make plans to hunt a new area.  Not that I still couldn't, I just don't.  I guess the biggest obstacle is mental... why go some place else, when you already pay for the place you have.   :bonk:
I guess it's not a bad "problem" to have.  Anyone else own property and never hunt anywhere else?

this has always been something ive wanted to try but have heard of the smaller populations and long distance from home just didnt want to do all the work and come home with nothing for the freezer. but ive been known to make hunting a "job" according to family but if you just relax and dont hunt too hard the experience should be worth it even if you dont get anything.

either way some day i may try it. be sure to post when finished and let us know how it was!
my wife said it.... im OFFICIALLY ADDICTED to MNO!!

One of my friends gave me the idea.  He and his father have been taking a boat to the back side of some state land near mille lacs for years and always gets their deer.  My daughter and myself are only going to be canoeing across a lake that is carry in only.  From all of the maps we have looked at there isn't a logging road or highway within a mile.  Over this past weekend we did a little bit of scouting.  We found a few deer trails that looked like cow paths.  We also found a lot of bear sign(rotting stumps ripped out of the ground).  Hopefully the bears leave the trail cam alone.  We picked out a few differant stand locations.  We will be going back in about a month and see if there are any big bucks that call the ridge top home.

I retrieved the trail cam today and there was a few small bucks, a doe and her fawn and 2 small bears.  I baited the site with horse food with mollasses and my salt/mineral mix.  Horse food went untouched and the salt was attacked.I have told my daughter that she can shoot any deer she wants but she was also told that deer with antlers are easier to drag and fawns can be carried out.  She said fawns taste the best but she is setting her sites much higher.  She was hoping to see bigger bucks on the cam.  I did remind her that the big ones will be on the move and we will be in a very good unhunted funnel. Here are a few of the pics.
