DNR seeks input on sunfish, crappie regulations in Itasca County
(Released August 23, 2011)

The Grand Rapids Area Fisheries Office of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has scheduled two public open-house informational meetings to gather input and public comment on sunfish and crappie regulation proposals in several area lakes.

A five-fish limit on sunfish is being proposed for Dixon, Sand and connected waters (near Max); Splithand, Little Splithand, Cut Foot Sioux and Little Cut Foot; and Blackwater, Jay Gould and Little Jay Gould. On Sand and connected waters, Dixon, and Splithand, the proposal also includes a five-fish possession limit for crappie.

The first meeting will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, in the training room at the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center, 402 11th St. SE, in Grand Rapids. The second meeting will be from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 28, at the Sand Lake Community Center, which is located on County Road 4 about four miles west of Spring Lake.

The meetings will consist of a brief presentation followed by an open-house format to discuss the proposals with DNR fisheries staff.

The objective of the regulations is to maintain quality fishing opportunities. Additional information about the proposals is available at the following website mndnr.gov/areas/fisheries/grandrapids/panfishregs.

For those unable to attend a local meeting, an additional open house is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the DNR Central Office, 500 Lafayette Road in St. Paul.

Public comments will be accepted until Monday, Oct. 10. All comments will be reviewed and a decision on implementation will be made by early December. If implemented, the regulations would become effective at the beginning of the 2012 fishing season.

Comments on the proposed regulations for lakes in Itasca County may be directed to Chris Kavanaugh, DNR Area Fisheries, 1201 E Highway 2, Grand Rapids, MN 55744 or email chris.kavanaugh@.state.mn.us.
