this weekend, we needed a getaway, just the guys, so I called my friend Joe in Bagley to see if he was around and he said come on over!
so scroungie and I packed up the wheelers. loaded the camper with bows, stands, and picked up a few groceries on the way.

rolling into camp about 2:30, we met Joe and a few new friends of the camp. they had been duck hunting, goose hunting and deer hunting all week off and on.
all I really wanted to do was relax. I thought if bubba wanted to hunt, I'd maybe film his hunt.
when evening was getting close, they asked where we'd like to hunt. I told them i didn't care if i did, but bubba said "I want to hunt!" and they laughed. they told us of a small field where the deer have been coming out each evening and took us there by wheeler to show Andrew a natural blind set up. I should have gotten pictures of this. it was cool. a large spruce tree with the long sweeping branches that went down to the ground. it had been hollwed out with a couple shooting windows opened up. it was perfect.

Andrew was quite excited to set up and about 5:00 I told him if he wanted to hunt, I'd run the camera. he was a little hesitant and I asked him what he was thinking. he said"I was just thinking of going out by myself". it kinda took me by surprise, but what the heck, he's twelve, he's been shooting his bow for three years now and is confident in the woods.
"allright bub"." have a ball".

so he loaded a chair, and the bow case onto the four wheeler and headed off.

about an hour and fifteen minutes later, we were walking trails back at camp and my phone rang, it was andrew..."dad, i just shot a deer". " you did not i said". "sure did, and I'm looking at another right now". no way. I told him we'd be there in fifteen minutes and to hang tight.

when we got to where he was, he informed us that there was more than one and that the one he got was a spiker. he told me that he shot once and it was a clean miss, right under it. then it ran a big circle and came back to him and he shot again, this time nailing it quartering away. he showed us which way it went and we found blood almost right away.
following the trail into the brush, we were thinking lung shot so we backed out for an hour. that was one long hour for Scroungie.

when we came back, he was in the front of the tracking crew with a flashlight. it didn't go far. 110 yards or so from POI.
not bad for a twelve year old kid eh?
Deer season is under way!

Congrats on his first bow deer. Good to see the young ones have the confidence to go it alone. Glad he had the patience to wait for help to track it down.
