Alright guys, had a guy at work offer to sell me a bow, quiver and about ten arrows for $10. He was cleaning the garage and just wanted it gone. I have never owned a bow but thought for ten bucks for almost everything...how could I go wrong.

The bow says it's a Ben Pearson Buck Buster. Came with 3 pins and all the arrows are easton's. It is not a new bow but is in working order. Where do I start? Never done this before and would like to learn slowly and cheaply  ;D. Are there things on it that I should replace? What other things should I make sure I have to get started in this? Should I tell my wife? LOL! I'll try to upload pics of it.

First thing to change would be the string.

if your new to archery you should make sure it fits you or you may end up hating archery.

How do I know if it fits? If I pull it back it feels fine do I need to take some sort of measurement?? It has a draw length of 31" at 60lbs. Relaxed weight of 50% and string length is 37". Does this help?

Take the bow to an archary shop and they can look the bow over and see if it fits you and fix any problems before they break.  If it turns out to be to old or to expensive to fix you could always use it for bow fishing which is a lot of fun.  also you wouldn't want to use a very expensive bow to shoot just carp.

Anyone know of an archery shop near Zimmerman that they trust and won't take a new guy for a ride?

Man, you really want a lot. lol..   There is a place just south of Zimmerman called Tails and Trails.  The owner is Scotty.  I can't vouch for him but it may be a good place to start.  It's about 1 mile south on the east side of 169.  I'd have him look at it for an opinion.  Remember, most places probably want to make a little in parts etc.

check your draw length using this chart http://www.huntersfriend.com/draw-length-weight.htm
or any other method you can find on the net to determine your draw length.
if you are close, go to a local public archery range and fling some arrows. start close range. there is a public range behind Dodge of Burnsville off of 35 and cliff road.

the simple fact that you picked up a bow tells me that youi have an interest in archery.
that is a good thing. a wonderful self challenging pass-time that you can persure as far as you like.

I have rekindled my love for archery that was spawned when I was a young tike in cubscouts.
the advancements in archery to todays techknowledgy blew me away.

if you are still interested in it once you start shooting and would like to upgrade a little bit, there are used package bows available all over for less than a couple hundred bucks. I have bought several for around $150, so minimal investment really to get involved in what could become your favorite new hobby  :king:
