Dagel hired as DNR fisheries specialist in Waterville

Jonah Dagel has been hired as a fisheries specialist for the nine-county Waterville Fisheries Area, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
Dagel will coordinate the local lake and stream survey program and use data to make recommendations for managing those fisheries. His work area includes 78 lakes and 107 rivers and streams across Blue Earth, Dodge, Faribault, Freeborn, Le Sueur, Mower, Rice, Steele and Waseca counties.

He will also be part of a DNR fisheries team that rears, harvests and distributes walleye and northern pike from rearing ponds in the Waterville area. Each year, the team produces 45 million walleye fry and 2 million northern pike fry for stocking in lakes locally and throughout the state.

Before moving to Waterville, Dagel had been working at the DNR’s Lake Superior office. There he used the geographic information system (GIS) to map land ownership around tributary streams of Lake Superior, and acquired DNR trout stream easements from interested landowners.

Dagel is completing his graduate degree through Mississippi State University, where his research focused on spawning patterns and recruitment of white crappies in flood control reservoirs in Mississippi. He earned his bachelor’s degree in wildlife and fisheries at South Dakota State University.
