I am suppose to go Dove hunting this afternoon for the first time with a friend of mine. He told me to make sure I buy a plug for my shotgun (Steven's 520) Said they have a rule about 3 shells. Ive never hunted migratory birds before.

Well I went down to fleetfarm and purchased a plug for the gun. And I can still put 3 in the tube??

So is the rule the magazine can't hold more than 3? (3 in the tube one in the barrel) Or do I need to get back to fleetfarm and buy a dowel to cut off??

If  you can get three in the tube your plug is too short and you will need a dowel.  The dowel will work just fine.  I once had to break off a tree branch and use it when I realized I had removed my plug at some point.  Two shells only can fit in the tube and 1 in the chamber.  Good luck.

Yes,"no more than 3 shell" are permitted, also I believe Mn game laws tell us we must use "non-tox" ammo like all migratory hunting.
