    • Fishing & Hunting South Dakota's Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe
I guided another of my repeat customers the Gordy Sorensen group from around Cairo NE. for a great one day of fishing down on Sharpe. A real nice bunch and we had 18 fish in the boat by noon and decided to take a lunch break needing 2 more fish for my limit. That turned out to be a mistake as after lunch the bite just died and we only managed one more fish in the next two hours. I have noticed on Sharpe that is a very common occurrence as many times in the afternoon the current just isn't right for both the bait and the fish and they get real tough to catch. We used spinner/crawler or gulp rigs in around 10 fow to catch these fish but both minnows and plugs work. The plug fishing is harder some days due to floating grass etc. There was a large amount of fishermen on both Oahe and Sharpe this weekend affirming the fact that Labor Day weekends are a real busy time. The bite on Oahe may be getting a little better as some of the fish are showing up in 20 to 30 fow and the size seems to be getting a little better so spending some time back on the big lake can be more of an option for those that know the lake. On Oahe minnows seem to come into play more but all the other ways work. One nice thing about Oahe is because of the bigger water you do not notice the large amount of boat traffic nearly as much as on Sharpe. Sharpe seems to concentrate boats in parking lot numbers in some of the community spots and speaking for myself I do not enjoy that kind of fishing as much. The good part is even then most people catch some fish but I find getting away from these community spot area's to be better whenever possible. There are fish all up and down the river and hunting them is to many of us just as much fun as the catching and eating. Well maybe not the eating. The bite on both lakes is good for those that know their way around but Sharpe can be tougher when the Corps runs too much current(makes dirtier water, floating grass and makes fish hunker down) or if they aren't running any so here the fishing is real current related at least in the first 20 miles below the dam.
