Usually it’s raccoons that are on the menu for bald eagles, not the other way around. However, raccoons are one of many opportunistic predators that will raid an eagle nest. Eggs are high in nutrients and make for a tasty snack, so much so that raccoons have been known to sneak into eagle nests while the parents are still on guard duty. According to CBS Pittsburgh, one female eagle was woken up last week when she found herself beak-to-face with an intruder. The camera hidden in the eagle’s nest managed to capture the full encounter.

“She’s obviously very protective,” said Gary Fujak of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

The female was guarding three eggs, which appeared to be unharmed.
