ORR – The Orr Recreation and Resource Center announced its plans for the former Orr School, which include a community center, health initiatives and an aquaponics farming operation.

The newly-developed organization has a contract for deed to buy the school from the city for $15,000 and has renamed the building the Orr Center.

“The school has been vacant since 2011, and it’s time to reopen its doors to new opportunities,” said Wendy Purdy. president of the Orr Center. “There is an untapped need for engaging learning experiences relating to youth development.” Part of that vision includes a summer camp experience for kids ages seven to 14.

Farming is also in the future for the facility with the installation of aquaponics systems, which would provide educational opportunities in sustainable farming practices. Aquaponics combines fish farming (aquaculture) with soil-less plant production (hydroponics) where the fish waste becomes fertilizer for the growing plants.

“It’s farming for the future,”
