Fishing Report Lakes Oahe/Sharpe Pierre Area August 1st 2nd and 3rd 2015

I worked for Dave Spaid helping him guide the annual Capitol Motors trip. Another bunch of real nice guys and gals from mostly Wyoming with Vick and Vic Jr. ramrodding the group. We spent two days fishing lower Oahe in average depths of 30 feet using nightcrawlers/bouncers/gulp. My group got their limits of walleye both days but had to work for the fish. We had over half of the fish in the 17 to 19 inch range but did have to put in some smaller walleye to get to our limits. Every boat also got some smallmouth and a few smaller northern as bonus fish. Right now Oahe is good if you land on active fish but can be tougher and you can spend more time trying to find schools of feeding fish. I give the edge to fishing on Sharpe if numbers are what you prefer. Smaller average size fish but more action on the smaller lake. I think a lot of the walleye on Oahe are suspending and chasing bait out in the deep maybe even around the thermocline so waiting for them to come up shallow is harder. I am hearing of some Salmon being caught in depths of around 90 fow. Not numbers but some real nice ones in the 19 to 20 lb range around the face of the dam. It is August so taking water and bug spray makes for safer better trips. Remember to comply with the new this year regulation of draining all water from your boat before leaving fish cleaning areas. This law is designed to prevent the spread of invasive species.
