The Rainy Lake Ice Roads are plowed and open and anglers have much greater access to the lake. Walleye have been caught in 30 feet of water using clog jigs and shiner minnows. Popular sports are Birch Point, MacIntyre Island and American narrows and the best bite is just at sunset. Larger Northern have been caught in Black Bay, use a sucker minnow and try fishing in the range of 20-25 feet of water. Crappie action has been described as slow.

Snowmobile trails still need more snow to be groomed and are described as rough. Lake trails staked in the Voyageurs National Park are better, but the safety portages have some exposed rocks and are described as rough. The good news is we’ve had a little snow lately and more is in the forecast.

The International Voyageurs Snowmobile Club has arrangements for a trail from International Falls to Rainy Lake via the village of Ranier. Be sure to follow the signs and obey all rules. The up-to-date trail conditions are reported at their website www.ridetheborder.com
