Minnesota Fishing-License Sales Drop to New Low

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Recent data from the state Department of Natural Resources shows fewer people are buying fishing licenses in Minnesota.

According to the department the number of licenses sold so far this year is down about 41,000, or 4.8 percent from the same time last year, the Star Tribune reported.

It's also the second-lowest fishing license sales number on record  in almost 20 years. The lowest number came in 2013, when the department sold 800,337 angling licenses through the weekend after July 4.

Jenifer Wical, marketing coordinator for the department's Fish & Wildlife Division, said the report fits into long-term trend of lower participation that's concerning. She said it shows that as elder anglers have been leaving the activity, but younger people haven't been taking their places.

Sales this year also could've been hurt by the holiday falling in the middle of the week, along with rainy weather, said Wical.

State officials had hoped the participation decline was because of a spillover effect from the long winter when sales were lagging earlier this season. Experts had doubts that northern lake ice would melt in time for the season opener for walleye and northern pike. The lakes did open, but cold water conditions stifled early catch rates.

Doesn't suprise me one bit,and if they (dnr) keeps jacking up fee's we'll see even fewer license purchses down the road, license fee increase, stamp price increses including hunting stamps enough already!

What did the DNR expect??
They close certain lakes in the state to spring northern fishing that used to be open (Basswood)  They change the size and limits to three different areas for Northerns.   :coffee:
They don't allow keeping any Walleye on lakes at certain times of year.  :doah:
They raise the license fees, and decrease limits.    :pouty:
Perhaps it would behoove them to get out of their offices and survey fishermen, resorts, and bait dealers before making some of these decisions.   :happy1:
I don't see anything changing.   :angry2:

The above is one of the reasons that played into selling my boat, although it wasn't the main reason. Having to drive a minimum of 50 miles to a lake from here, and then all the restrictions and can only keep one certain size waldo, fish, etc., just wasn't worth it. I know a lot of my buddies feel the same way. They keep the stoopidity up, and they'll be in a huge downward monetary spiral, IMO.

Agreed Reb, I did the same, sold my boat two years ago, grew up on mille lacs, figured with all the BS going on with the lake and all the regulations these days why bother, gave up canadian trips as well where we have to jump through whoops to get to and from canada, tight slots due to over harvesting (native netting ) as  tourism is way down as of late...why bother running to ontario with a 17" to 24" protected slot and two walleye possession limits to bring home....PASS...

Had a couple store bought walleyes last weekend, walleyes came from lake winnepeg, nice clean small fillet's @ $12/lb,money way ahead with zero brain damage.

ya know........... i dont neccesarily disagree with you guys.............yea even you greatoutdoors!!!!!!!!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :smoking: some of the things the DNR does or doesnt do makes no sense sometimes, BUT in all reality the cost of the license vs the time spent on the lake, or in the woods......calculate the cost per hour. its really peanuts. getting something to take home is a bonus.

sure if your going to add the cost of tackle, boat, beer yea your better off going to the meat market, or like Dew does for fish..........heads to morey's!!!!!!!

if your not spending your liesure money on hunting and fishing  chances are you'll pizz it away doing something else!!!!!!!
