Funny.... I've seen several Pintails up close and personal, but they have always been out of season when the encounter has occurred. Very distinct call, and you can pick them out if you know what your looking for.

Nice pic 👍

If we wind up someplace other than MN eventually SD is a more likely candidate, at least if I'm still married. I'd go back to ND in a heartbeat otherwise. I definitely want to make a road trip to the area where I used to live. I pull up the satellite map every once in a while to look at it. Not sure but it looks like a lot of the outbuildings on the building site where I used to live have been ripped out. Hard to tell as the trees are a lot larger now and they cast some shadows that make it difficult to see. The definition doesn't take it down quite far enough to know if the house & sauna are still there or not. I came real close to making an offer to buy the place in '83 and staying there. Was 3 miles to my mailbox so it was pretty private & secluded. Devils Lake about an hour away, all the small lakes in the Turtle Mts. along with living across the road from the NW end of the Armourdale Reservoir, not to mention the ducks, geese, sharptails and Huns. Then I moved back to MN. What was I thinking?  :pouty:

The only Pintail I ever shot looked just like the picture. Dumped it like a rock, then before I could paddle over to it popped up and drove for the reed bottoms never to be seen again!  I looked for a half hour for that bird to have it mounted but never could find it.

I've lived a few places in Minnesota, mostly where I am now. I've been happy in all of them. In my opinion, happiness doesnt come from what state you live in, it is a state of mind.

I was very fortunate. The first pintail I shot was in '81 near Starkweather ND. I'd been invited to hunt with my college buddy who lived in Devils Lake. He was on point calling the shots as the ducks and geese came in. It was my 1st hunt over snow and blue goose field decoys on some durum stubble. Saw a small group coming in low along with a group of mallards and they were hauling freight. He said "Take 'em!" & we did. Got a couple mallards & one of the pintails. I'd never seen one up close. Was amazed by the intricacy of the pattern on the breast feathers. I shot several more over the course of the 3 years I lived up there. Usually got them closer to Devils Lake and not so much up around where I lived.

They sure do.  :happy1: Been watching a group in the field across the road the past week or so. Neighbor seeded something in it that's greening up already. There are a dozen or so that graze it almost constantly. Thought it was their weaned calves. Nope.
