Hit the ice this morning on dexter in the west metro.   We took the 4 wheeler out.  After a popping our holes and setting out our tipups we measured the ice.  We had 7 inches in 2 of the holes and 9 in the other 2.   At about 9 we watched a half ton truck drive out onto the lake.  Then 5 min later a minivan. Then a 3/4 ton extended cab pulling an ice castle.  Ended up watching 6 more trucks drive out onto  the ice.  None of them even checked the ice.

More luck than commonsense.

Don't you know, thin ice only happens to others.     :bonk:

Its been cold, so they feel its thick enough, no understanding how snow slow the making of ice. Kinda like glenn, he sits on the ice and thinks he can catch fish, but dosent understand that he actually slows the the catching proccess.

That's what I was wondering about, the snow factor. We've got people starting to drive out here. But, we have next to nothing for snow. Called a guy who happened to be fishing Wed. or Thurs. on Clear Lake in Waseca and he had driven out. Ice was a foot thick.

We stopped in a South metro bait shop yesterday and I over heard the kid behind the counter tell a fella there's 18" of ice on most area lakes,  that was bad advice cuz we had 12" on a lake 5 miles down the road.  Then again lakes will differ depending on size and depth.

"It must be safe of all those other guys are out there..."   :bonk:

But at least there is small consolation that there is "safety" in numbers.  Can you image being out there alone on a drifting ice sheet with dead cell phone battery?

Been there floating steve-o on mille laces, years before we had cell phones,we hiked out of red door on big point on a saturday afternoon,8-10"s of ice, hiked out to 3 mile, had a film crew along, our group iced 30 walleyes that afternoon....great time had by all, next day (sunday) we had a small group return to our honey hole,we headed out off big point as a cold front was moving in,strong wind/mist,stepped over cracks in the ice as we walked out at day break,by mid morning the mist turned to snow squalls,my "yahoo" buddies razed me about complaining why my fishing line was going off at an angle below my ice hole, claimed it was from lake currents....names like "nervous nellie" and my depth kept changing from 20' to under 30',so being the youngest guy in the group I was out popping holes all over,I watched huge sheets of ice jet up from the lake in slow mo then sink below the ice sheet, off in the distant we could here a 3 wheeler approaching our elders yelled to secure(hide) our fish as intruders approached, little did we know the 3 wheeler was from hunter's point, from  they're vantage point they could see the lake was breaking up in the heavy wind,3 wheeler was coming out to help us return to shore as we floated towards east shore, finally when we had a break in snow squalls I could see nothing but white caps between us and big point.when  I called out to others, fish traps flew open and the words "holy crap" resinaited, all of a sudden no more nurvous nellie,we had open water on both sides of us as we walked east, lake ice slid ontop of shore ice letting this 3 wheeler get to our group, taking the oldest guy back to shore first,no way a boat could've reached us because of the thick floating ice chunks between us and shore,I remember untyng my boots and unzipping my cover all's thinking we were about to get wet,3 wheeler could no longer make another run out to us as the ice sheet really broke up,our group managed to walk off at hunter's pt that day as the sun set,the day my hair started to gray...We all stood on shore thanking god we made off safely.
