Just caught the end of this story on Ch 9 news tonight. Has anyone else heard of this or have any opinion on it? It sounds like it is very close to the main highway in this area. This is the first I have heard of it, but I am south of the metro so I am not really too surprised about that fact.

Here is the story:

A few dozen deer carcasses are spread all over a wooded area in Big Lake off Highway 10. About every five feet, hooves, bones and partial carcasses can be found.

According to MnDOT, the site has been there for about five to ten years as a designated road kill dumping site. Only MnDOT is allowed to make any dumps, and doesn't want others to use it.

The DNR says the carcasses are in a proper spot away from homes and are safer there than being left on the roads. DNR conservation officers say there is no illegal activity and they don?t see any health risk at the site.

A MnDOT spokesperson wants to stress this is nothing new. These types of dump sites are all over the state

I have heard of this

I have also heard that alot of the road kill does not make it that far and just gets dumped almost anywere to save time and money. lets face it, if you see a city or state truck in a small wooded area you think nothing about it.so its just always been over looked for the most part. :police:

Are you a hunter or do you just kill things? Respect the wildlife!

My as well just drag the dead animal a few yards farther off the road and let all the wild animals eat some...Not just the few lucky enough to be born near a dumping station.

a friend of mine up here owns the pet crematorium in Grand Rapids.
he told me all the road kills had to be cremated. they had been hauling them to the land fill, but that  means of disposal of carcasses had been discontinued. it meant $$$ for him.

I agree.  One of those deals where no matter what they do, someone is going to complain.  It must not be too stinky if its been there for 5 years and this is the first complaint.  With the number of coyotes around me (I'm not that far away from there), should only be mostly bones and hide left anyway.

It is a tough situation. I just  hope that the sites that are being used for dumping carcasses is far enough away from trails and areas frequently used by people that people are not going to have to walk through these areas and possibly into the middle of a coyote's lunch break.

I am guessing by most of your replies that you are from or around the cities.  I live in northern MN and have seen this for many many years.  And they actually dump deer a mile+ from my home.  Yes it is in the middle of nowhere, and I am probally one of the few that have noticed them.

It is a fact of life that we humans have created.  Before deer only died when hunted or of natural causes.  No cars involved.  Most of the deer are eated by birds and other small scavengers.  I can understand the concern if too many are dumped in one area but your right some will always be complaining.

For the people who complain about dumping them, maybe they should quite driving or they can give all the dead animals a proper burial ::hittingself::
