After reading the D-con story, I thought I'd better throw this one out there,  Ya know those big white rope tug/chew toys ?  Them things should be banned!  when my Ryman English Setter was about 15 wks old he suddenly became very lethargic, wouldnt eat, or drink water.  headed to the vet & they did some tests and X-rays.  He was a couple hours away from death from being backed up in the intestines in a few places...had to decide Quick if I wanted to shell out $1200 to have them go thru the intestines by hand.....Well I'd just recieved my tax return and WAS going to get a generator,  but the little $900 monster was lookin at me from his kennel at the vet and told the doc to go for it even though he said there werent any guarenties at this stage...well he made it, and they pulled out the equivilant of a baseball sized pile of torn/chewed up pieces of those rope chew toys from three areas in his intestinal tract!  I nearly changed his name to Lucky(as in lucky I had the cash in my wallet...) He kept his name, Drummer, and is 3yrs old now and is the best dog I've had yet...maybe do to the fact he is in major debt to me I suppose.  To this day he's a bit of a chewer,  but its only dog bisquits and nylabones for him now....he's even been caught destroying the heavy duty Kong chew toys.....The vet said it is pretty common to either put dogs down or open em up over things eaten by the dogs...like bone shards,  wood chips (co-co hulls are really bad cause they are poisenous and taste good!) big pieces of raw-hide, stuffing from the stuffed animal type toys are also things they've removed.(including a couple fishing lures from Labs stomach's....go figure!)   So keep this in mind, especially you puppy owners, I dont wish anyone to go thru what I did....and most dogs aint worth payin out that kind of $$$!!!            -thunderpout 8)

Those vinyl toys should never be given to dogs either. Chucks cousin got a choc lab pup from us and over a year developed bad allergies. One day he got extremely sick. Took him to the vet and were unable to save him. Did an autopsy and discovered he was septic(septicemia-the invasion and persistance of pathogenic bacteria in the blood stream)  from toxins from those vinyl toys.  When dogs chew those toys they release toxins into their body and blood. NOT GOOD

Thanks for sharing!  Are there any safe toys for dogs?  My beagle "Buddy" absolutely loves chew toys, but after reading this-I'm leary on letting him have any until I know for sure he'll be safe. 

Also, are the rawhide chew toys ok?  He is VERY protective of them (will nip at you if you try to take it from him), as they are his favorite of all toys.

wow i didnt know this about rope toys after reading this i threw buster's away so what toys are good for a dog?buster has a big old bone that he chews was wondering if that is ok ? i sure dont want to lose my golden thank you once again for the info

My dogs fav. toys are freshly killed ring necks. I give him 2/day in the fall!!! They arn't chew toys though, but he loves to retrive them!!! I give him a lot of raw hide. I think that should be ok. He has swallowed some big chunkc and has been just fine.

Looks like we're limited to sticks.  I forgot to mention that when I had my golden at the vet for the D-Con there was a little lap dog there who had been hit by a car.  I asked its name and guess what it was -- yep, Lucky.  I told them its a good thing they didn't name it

Good info.  I emailed this to my brother who has a dog that loves to chew the ends off and swallow them.  I assumed this wasn't good, but now I know what can happen.   ::cheers::

Nylabones are still some of the safest chews out there. I too had a rope that the dogs play with and I to threw it away  I sometime buy the rawhide chips and give the dogs those but they are small. and I don't do it real often.

SO .......   please tell me about raw hide  . i have two very large germansheperds  that love em . is this bad for them.  if so  what can i give them ??   thanx for any help ( p.s nylabones do not work with them , they shred  them in seconds )

A  few things on rawhide,  Ive heard that you should only buy it if its a USA product because alot of it comes from south america/mexico and they dont regulate what rawhide is treated with down there because its not for humans...theres stuff in it like arsnic (sp?) and lye....mmm yummy!  I've been told by a few vets that its ok for your dog as long as they dont swallow big chunks of it whole, as it wont digest as well as if it was chewed up.  The pressed, ground up/shaped form crumbles up when chewed, and is safer supposedly.....the hard nylabones are supposed to be safe because they are slowly ground down into small rice sized pieces that pass right thru your dog.  If ya get the big honkin nylabones 10/12" long its hard for em to get leverage and do more damage to em...Shepards have wolf like jaws, so I dont Know what would be tuff enough....I guess dogs have evolved so much they cant pass chewed up bones and whatever else wolves can gulp down!  My first setter ate my wool twins cap, and my dads wing-tip shoes soles, nails and all....and lived to an old age.  My buddies Gordon setter used to eat rocks and sticks...(tuff mutt!)  So I guess ya just try to controll what they eat best ya can, which I dont even do well for myself!       -thunderpout 8)

  THANX thunder !  for the info !!  my dogs are doing pretty good considering they can eat a raw hide  knotted  12 inches long in about an hour !!  i just dont want to give  them anyting that will hurt them.    scott

 I have the prefect chew toys for my dog
Antlers she loves them. If they are fresh (not sun bleached) they do not chip, get slimy, or smell. If you want an afternoon without your dog bugging you for attention just toss her an antler. If you dont want to give her your antlers get them from E-bay or I have a few buckets of them If you wanted to work somthing out. mostly for small-med size dog

My dog loves rawhides, but they can be dangerous as well. Cut a chunk off and stick it in a glass of water before you go to bed. It will be about 5 times the size when you wake up the next day. This can happen in your dogs stomach as well and cause blockage.

I am to the point where I have heard bad stories of just about any toy out there. It seems nothing is safe for a dog to chew on. Mine gets bored with the nylabones but loves rawhides.

Woody - mine used to get pretty nippy when I tried to take away his bone as well. I continue to take it away to this day if he gets in his "its mine" mood. I don't know about your dog but mine has some dominance issues that need to be put in check from time to time. I have to let my dog know it is mine, not his, and I am allowing him to play with it. He is much better now about it and he knows he gets it back if he is good. I hope your dog is not this way but thought I would share the info in case he/she is.

A trick I learned from TR for Dogs was to never let a dog self feed.  Don't put food down and leave it there all day.  My dogs have to sit and wait for me to put all 3 bowls down then when I say OK they can eat.  If they choose to not eat it all in about 15 or 20 minutes, then it goes back in the tub.  Dogs live for food so if they know you control it, you are the one to be nice to.
