1-12-08  Sheriff has come out with warnings in the newspapers and on tv about unsafe ice conditions for driving.  Still seeing 8-16 inches around the lakes, with mostly atv and sled traffic.  We do see the occasional truck and car drive across near our house, but not many.  Crappies continue to hold out over deep water, 10 suspended.  Walleye have a quick 1 hour window at dusk and dawn, fatheads and shiners at around 18 feet.  Crappie bite has been all day, might want to be portable with the Vexlar, seems mobility helps to track them during the day.  Red combinations working best, Demons the hottest sellers today.

talking to people coming off the lake last night, seems the bite changed over to a late afternoon one for crappies.  Started around 3.  Some of the gents coming in for libations for the night were not happy they had to leave at 5 or 6 since they waited all day for the action to start....in a hurry to get back out on the spots....ahhh, the tribulations of an ice fisherman!  Some were planning to stay out all night, will have to see what the morning brings.

Yep, lately it seems to be the drink'en spot instead of a fish'in spot.    :toast:
Looks like it's time to pull the house and head to one of my super secret spots.
Since someone wanted my old jiggle stick inside the fish house, more than me, it's time to pack'er up.

Just got home from the store.  Guys who stayed out all night slammed crappies around 5:30 am.  Otherwise some people were ok around 1:30 today also.  Rumor has it East Lake by Flickabirds is seeing some slab sized crappies in shallows..rumor though!  Northern were the story of the day, with the north bay and shallower areas near Cigar putting out a steady catch all day long.  Had to bring in another order of suckers just to keep up with the demand. Large, almost decoy size preferred.  Crappies still on Demons, red/yellow combinations.

Speaking of trucks on the lake, on 1/4/08 (two fridays ago) I saw a truck(with an atv on a trailer) go to the 40' hole by crane from the public access. My jaw dropped, we stopped and waited to see what would happen, I couldn't believe they didn't go down. :bonk:  Thank god it wasn't a busy weekend day and others didn't see that and decide to follow the leader. Then somebody surely would have gone in....

Just last weeked I drilled a spot that had only about 8" of ice and this was only about 50 yards from where this truck drove. Just goes to show that the ice is NEVER safe. Years like this make me never want to drive my truck out.
