favorite secret campground / campsites

lets cough up some good info here for our readers.
everyone has that favorite campground they love to go to.
for what ever reason, it has been earmarked as one of their favorite places to camp.
c'mon, anybody besides me care to share?

my favorite place to camp, though i have never camped there....figure that one out, is
Bass lake campground near Togo.
How I found it was by visiting my brother who was doing some work up there.
this place is located west on MN hwy 1 from Togo.
then south on a gravel road.
I don't recall the name of the road, but it is easy to find.
there are three lakes on this road. the first one is Bass lake. the second a lake, which, the name escapes me, but back to back state record splake came out of just a couple years ago.
Bass lake campground has nearly fifty sites, and about six of those sites are on an island with a narrow band of dirt going out to the island so you can drive right to your campsite, but you better get there early for that one.
the campsites are scattered on either side of the campground road along the north side of the lake. at the end of the road, there is a swimming beach.a very nice sandy beach indeed.
the access to the lake is farther down the gravel road on the southern part of the bay.

besides the beauty of the lake, which is your typically beautiful northern MN lake with hills and pines is the remoteness of it all.
there are numerous trails, made over time by atv's. it is obvious to me that there is little harassment by enforcement of atv's, and it is a given that it is accepted behavior.
keeping in mind the common courtesy we should allways extend to neighboring campers.
Bass lake campground is owned by Itasca county.
there is a campground host who stays there all season. (tough job eh?)
I hope some of you take advantage of this hot tip. if you do, you WILL  be back and I wouldn't doubt this would become an annual trip you and your friends and family make.

AH yes the old Bass Lake camp ground.

The road going in I think is called the Larson Lake road and the lake further in is Larson Lake.

But you can also get to Coon Lake if you drive WAY back in there.

Used to fish and camp at Larson for many years as a kid up there.

We found Coon Lake while exploring with our ATV's ,back then it was just a jeep trail made by the loggers.

Now you can see the old shack from Larson Lake due to the loggers wiped out the forest up there.

Some of my fondest memories are from my childhood when my parents took us to East Bearskin Campground on the Gunflint Trail.  I'm sure almost any campground on the Gunflint will suffice, but East Bearskin is where I hope to someday take my own family to and make our own fond memories!

My favorite spot in the world is the east end of Basswood Lake in the BWCA.? ?There are about 4 or 5 really sweat sites in that area and I am usually luck enough to get one of them.

My second favorite spot is not really a camp ground or site, but a USFS Picnic Area on the St. Louis River south of Hoyt Lakes. The name of it is Norway Point.? It is just a really cool spot on a ridge of Norway Pines that overlooks a big bend in the river and the bog.? It is a pretty wild and remote area and is an awesome spot to go to just to gather your thoughts.? It is not used all that much and I guess that is a reason I love it so much.? I spent fathers day there last year with my kids and sister and mom.? I only go there once a year or so and it is always very relaxing when I do.
