Grandpa loved to chase big haukkies.  He liked to get them, kill them, take pictures of them.  He was pretty good at it.  Moijakka was often served at the grandparents house.

I used to plan my college classes/exams so that I would be back at the lake at least a week ahead of Memorial Day, to scope out the fish and be ready for the start of the tourist season.  Grandpa often stopped in at the cabin in those evenings to find out what was happening, and offer a few nuggets of wisdom....

My cousin and I had been out one day, and caught our walleyes, and spent the remainder of the afternoon hunting down big northerns.  We did well....  We also let the big girls go.....  Grandpa wasn't happy....

My cousin hopped in his boat and took off home, but Grandpa hung out for a while, interrogating me on this "catch and release" deal.  I don't think he actually believed we had caught the fish.  Finally, after a couple of nips, he relaxed and explained to me the secret  to catching spring-time northerns.

"Baby ducks" he whispered, with a chuckle and sly grin.

"Huh?" says I.

"Mallards are best, but you can use mergansers if you're in a pinch" he said, tossing back a shot.  "Catch the little ones with a landing net, and use 'em for bait."

He went on to explain the system of harnesses with buckles and treble hooks, with a length of good solid line leading to a HyLex jug.  It sounded plausible, but it had been a long day on the water, and Grandpa went home, and I pretty much filed his info away....

Grandpa was dead.

Dad and I went into Grandpa's garage to sort things out, and figure out what was worth saving.  We spent hours going through things, tossing some stuff and putting other things aside to save.

Dad picked up a cigar box, looked inside and tossed it at me.  "Recognize that?" he asked, and went back to rummaging through the debris.

Inside the box were little leather harnesses, with straps, buckles, huge treble hooks, and large barrel swivels.  "Hey Dad - is this what I think it is?" I asked.

Dad looked at me, said "toss it out" and went on with his sorting.

NG-

Don't need no pics.  Rebuilt and modified Grandpa's existing designs using modern materials.

You don't actually think I'd have actually tossed out such valuable relics without careful scientific study?!

Grandpa knew what he was doing.....
