Keep Ely in Minnesota!
Why would anyone want to go to Ely, Nebraska?
April 2, 2008

It was revealed today that negotiations between Canada and Minnesota for the purchase of the town of Ely by the Province of Ontario, have hit a snag. Once believed to be an elaborate April Fool's joke, the story has now attracted national attention. It's now been learned that Nebraska has submitted an undisclosed bid for the town. Ely officials are also believed to have heard from the states of Kansas, Oklahoma as well as an exiled former South American dictator, each interested in moving the scenic and bucolic town to their part of the world.

Officials say they have been caught off guard by all the interest and are urging anyone interested in visiting the Ely area to make the trip this summer while the town is still four hours from the Twin Cities instead of a possible ten or twelve - or a several-day donkey ride. Minnesota residents are left wondering if this might be the last summer to enjoy the one million acres of unspoiled wilderness Ely is known for worldwide.

I can't believe the State MN would even consider selling.  What would happen to all the US citizens?  Would they be forced into becoming candian?

These same stories circulated years ago.   It reminds me of the true case in southern Minnesota. A survey revield that a river had shifted and a farm that was thought to be in Minnesota was actually in Iowa.  A year later a reporter intervied the farmer and ask how things were living in Iowa.  He replied "pretty much the same, but I really don't miss the dang Minnesota winters".
