Late season hunting has been starting to really heat up for me. the birds are bunching up and it has been a blast.  I have mostly been hunting the LQP refuge lately and am making one last trip to SD this weekend. adam

I hit some areas around litchfield friday, ended up seeing 6 roosters in 2 hours.  2 held for points but i never got a shot off, these birds are smart this time of year and there always seemed to be a tree or farmhouse in the way of my shot.  All the birds were in shelterbelts along cattails or cut fields.  One WPA had tracks everywhere, im going to try to hit it over the holidays.. The crusty snow really tore up the dogs paws, i wish I could keep boots on him. Adam

We went out this morning, it was hard walking but worth it.
Corn is still up here, and the snow is deep.

Went out Saturday as well. 2 birds for three guys. Small groves in the afternoon are a great place to hit this time of year. Tough walking in the snow and many of the ditches and CRP are full of snow. Gonna hit it one more time on the 1st and call it a year.

Got out Tuesday with my dad for some late season pheasant in the Marshall/Canby area.

It wasn't all that bad, granted there was blowing snow, and some getting lost for a couple hours, but we got a bird. The biggest problem was that there was a coating of ice on top of the snow, so you were crunching loudly everywhere you went, so the birds heard you coming a long way off. If anyone plans to get out again, bring snowshoes or something like that, might make you quieter. There were birds all over, but again, we weren't very sneaky and they were getting up well out of range.

Oh, and if any of you on here are from New Prague, either you, or someone from your town, are some wonderful people. Me and the dad got turned around a couple times, and since he didn't check his GPS batteries before going out, we wandered around the same section of land from 0900 to about 1430 or so. Finally came across some other hunters who drove us to our vehicle, yeah, bringing my GPS next time with a couple spare sets of batteries!
This is the internet, please remain calm.  I mean you no harm...

I did make it out today and boy am I glad I did I only had to walk to of my spots and we had our 6 roosters.  And it took us only an hour to fill out.  It was by far the best day I have had all season.

Made it out for about an hour, flush 2 hens and 1 rooster that came home with me, after that, my back was sore.  The area I was hunting had drifts, hard drifts, but not hard enough to hold my weight.  About 12-24 inches deep, you would step and just about get all the weight on the forward foot, the trailing foot almost out of it's hole, and you would break through and drop again.

It really sucked.

So maybe I should start a new thread about snowshoes?  I have a wooden pair, work really well, but would not be the best in working small areas.  So any snowshoe suggestions?  Something small and oval to keep a person from breaking through the crust and wrenching the crap out of his back?  :censored:

The snow drifts in many areas where really bad.  Alot of the cover has been drifted in by all the snow.

Moving2thecountry  I dont know how much public land that there is around in that area.  I was hunting all private land.  But i dont know what your plans are.  I definatly would pack the snow shoes with you if you are going to make the drive down to sourthern mn there is alot of drifting snow every where.

I was talked into going out pheasant hunting with the hubby.  I am soooo glad I said yes it was absolutly awsome.  We only had to walk to spots and we had our 6 roosters and it only took us as hour to get them.  I have never seen birds group up like they were.  It was the best day of hunting I have ever had here in mn.

The snow drifts were horrible down there alot of cover blown over by all the drifting.  I sure hope that the birds will be able to find places to hide with cover fro the rest of the winter.

Tubbs work the best for me. Only place I cannot use them are in heavy cattails. One suggestion, you do get what you pay for when it comes to snow shoes. The binding can make or break them.

Just got back from a 2 hour hunt.  Flushed about 30 birds, 10 very close, 5 of which were hens, and the other 5 I could not identify or could not shoot due to safety.  It was the most pheasants I've seen in this particular swamp.

What area of the state did you hit today?  Well at least you saw a good number of birds.

Southwestern Minnesota.  Some deep drifts, but not too bad.  I think small swamps at the bottom of a hill next to a farm field are the way to go this time of year.

Oh yeah, my dog almost caught one of the hens who got stuck trying to flush.  Good thing the hen got away, because my dog's heart would have been broken if I told her to drop it.  (She would have dropped it, but it would have broken her heart:)

Good luck. The drainage ditches and CRP are full of snow. You will need to hit heavy cover like cattails and groves. This is where we had our best luck a week ago. Hunted west of Clara City 20 to 30 miles.

That is totally understandable when it comes to public land you gotta be careful otherwise everybody will be out there.  I am pretty luck cuz I have around 1500 acreas of private land locked down that I have permission to hunt.
