Dang it! My first loss in four years. If I can't get an early surplus I am off to Wisconsin. I can't go a whole year without spring turkey season.

I'm in, can't wait.

Cody, I think how it works is if you applied and didn't get drawn you can apply for the surplus which would be gun. I think Bow is open to anyone but just the last two seasons. If you were drawn you can use gun or Bow any time. You may want to check the DNR regs on-line

Hey Cody

Those will go to any one. A bow hunter that buys a lic can go any were that there is 50 or more permits given out. Any zone with 50 permits or more per season. Bow hunters get the last two seasons. So if you bow hunt them you will get two weeks. But you can only get one permit. Not sure but if you go into the drawning for a lic I am not sure you are able to get a bow lic. It is a grey area. That is why I alway go get the bow lic. That way I get two weeks and a lot of zones to go to. Yes it is late in the seasons but oh well. Still a lot of fun.

First year trying and didn't make the cut.  :(

Quick question:  How is the lottery different for land owners?  If I own land in Permit area 218 am I pretty much guaranteed a tag if I had applied as a land owner?

I'll have to go back and check, but off the top of my head, you would then have to open your land for public use.

Don't quote me on it, but I'll look.

This is from the DNR website:

LANDOWNER/TENANT SPECIAL DRAWING
Up to 20 percent of the permits for each wild turkey permit area and time period will be issued by computer selection to applicants who live as landowners or tenants on 40 acres or more of land within the wild turkey permit area for which they have applied. The qualifying land may be non-contiguous. Members of the immediate landowner or tenant family, and living on the qualifying property are also eligible for this drawing.
Landowners/tenants who qualify for the landowner special drawing will need to provide the following information when applying at the ELS-POS agent to be eligible--the qualifying land is located in: county number (see map), township number, range number, section number, number of acres, and your day-time telephone number. Invalid applications will be rejected without notice.
Qualified landowners or tenants who are successful in this special drawing must allow turkey hunting on their land during the entire turkey-hunting season. Information on the location of such land will be available to other turkey hunters at the DNR website after the drawing.

Hope this helps,
Hunter

I could be wrong, but I think if you get a surplus license for bow hunting, you can only go Either of the 2 last seasons (G or H), not both seasons.  So you would get to hunt a full week, not 2 weeks.  Like I said though, I could be wrong on that.

This is also from the DNR web site:

An archery spring turkey license can be purchased that is valid for the last two time periods only in any permit area with 50 or more permits per time period. Lottery applicants that are successful in the 2009 spring turkey lottery will not be eligible to purchase an archery spring turkey license.

Does that answer the question?

Thanks for the info Hunterdown!

This will probably sound selfish but it's a little disconcerting that if I go out and buy 200 acres of land for my personal hunting experience, I would have to open it up for public consumption in order to apply for a tag as a land owner and therefor have a better chance of getting a tag.

Like I said it probably sounds selfish and my talking about it won't change it.  But I voted so I get the right complain about it.   :sorry:

Either way I'm past it and good luck to all of you that were successful in getting your tags!
