how old is your son? I think a 7mm is too big for a kid

personally for my daughter (12) will be getting a 243 youth model savage around $350 new before next season

Depending on age and size, I think a 7mm is to big. my daughter likes the .270 and I also am a fan of the 308. The problem I see with most guns including the youth ones is the grip is to large for most kids. I know alot of people dont like Mossberg but there 4 x 4 model does have a small grip. Just my 2 cents worth. :fudd:

I agree a 7mm is to big they kick hard and your kid will flinh and pull the shot in most cases that I have seen if it will be a deer only gun I think the 243 would be my choice, small light and very acurate for a long ways out there.

I like the .270 bolt for most kids...........But, it depends on the size of the child.
I have the kids shoulder the firearm and fit it to them. They need to be comfortable, and not streching to handle the gun. And, this firearm is one of the best all around guns you can buy.

.243 is the 2nd choice for smaller kids, recoil is light and accurate.

I, myself, would stay away from the lever or hammer actions for kids.
I have seen many mishaps at the firing range from small hands handling firearms that don't fit properly.

30-06, 30-30, or 270 should be fine.  7MM is a lot of gun for a new person to start out with, especially a young hunter.  We need more young hunters...
Take a kid hunting and fishing... It'll be the best thing for generations to come.

I would go with the .06 for a few reasons.
1.  Easy enough to shoot.
2.  Rounds are easy to find, regardless of where you go.
3.  If one of you need another round or two for whatever reason in the field, you can ask eachother.
4.  Most importantly, Great caliber!!!

I have a 308 and love it. The reason I went with it is because I wanted a semi auto gun so I was going to buy the Remington 7400 in 30-06 but after borrowing one i noticed it jammed quite alot. so i went to Joes and talked to the gun guy he suggested sticking with the 7400 but going with the 308. He explained that the cartridge is shorter and therfore can eject straight out where the 06 has a long cartridge and has to eject at an angle. As far as power for deer the 308 is more than enough, shoots very flat and was once a top choice for snipers.

I have hunted with a 270 for a couple of decades and love it.  My dad and my son both shoot 308's with great success.  Both calibers are easy on the shoulder and will bring down what you are shooting at.  I have tried a wide variety of calibers and these 2 are by far my favorites.

i would stick with the 30 06 because anything less dosnt bring big bucks down easily. my dad lost one and i shot mine twice in the vitals and once in the rump breaking the back leg. while i was gutting he started breathing agian and kicking for a few seconds. we use .30 .30s 06 will drop them there. otherwise a 300 is nice but if your in the woods you dont need it. its like a 308 but shoots flatter. this is a great gun for fields or if you go elk hunting etc... it will be my next gun for sure.
my wife said it.... im OFFICIALLY ADDICTED to MNO!!

Now you made this too easy. I'm a bit partial to savage so will say 270 savage. As with any rifle don't get any light weight model. Had a model 70 light wieght once in 270 an the thing kicked like a 300 mag. Now I have a savage 270 an love it.
