One doe down in Wisconsin and going after another tonight here in MN with another doe hunt tomorrow. Next week I will look for my buck.

I was out yesterday morning.  I didn't see anything but the guy I'm hunting with saw 2 Doe and 2 Fawns.

First bow hunt ends in disappointment.
I went bow hunting yesterday afternoon with a couple brothers in laws.  After fixing up a stand, we went back to camp to get ready for an evening hunt.  While standing around talking, (about 4:30 PM) we noticed a small doe feeding about 150 yards away.   We watched the deer for about 10 minutes as she fed toward us.  When she approached a round bale I decided to put on a stalk.  Using the bale as cover I was able to get with in 30 yards.  I saw the arrow pass through the deer and land on the ground a few yards beyond.  It looked like a good shot but in retrospect it was a little too far back.  After some discussion we decided we had to follow the blood trail and recover the deer before dark.  The blood trail wasn’t hard to follow but occasionally it took us a while to pick it up when she changed directions.  We decided to keep following because it would be very difficult to follow after dark and no way could we leave her overnight.  We eventually gave up when it grew too dark to follow the trail.

I had 3 monster does come in and it was too dark to see throught my peep so I never shot! They came in at 7:36 pm and I just climbed down off my stand and was getting my bag ready to go as teh came tromping down the trail. After this rain ill be back down there!

I was only able to hunt the mornings over the weekend due to work, but I was thankful that the temptation to hunt the afternoons was staved off because it would have been a little too warm for me to want to shoot something.  I was able to arrow a nice healthy doe at 8 AM on Saturday to get the 2009 season off to a nice start and to start refilling my meat freezer!  Good luck to everyone out there the rest of the way and be safe!

I went out both mournings it was to warm for me to go in the afternoon. I saw about 3 on Sat and about 7 on Sunday. I'm only allowed 1 deer so I passed on all the does and fawns.

I had some rotton luck as well.  I didn't see any all sat. or sun. morning.  Sunday night I had one 20 yards down wind of my stand and facing me so I had no shot.  I got ready in case it decided to turn broadside but soon the head pop up she sniffed the air and took off running.  At 7:00 I had three more adult does walk in one was 35 yards away and in the brush one was 20 yards away and in thick brush and one was 10 yards away and in thick brush all were behind my stand up wind so There is a chance.  The 10 yarder is heading towards an opening so I get ready for a shot.  As she steps out of the brush I release the arrow hitting her way too high (fairly sure I hit above the lungs but right below the spine).  I didn't take in accout the hight I was and that is was half the didstance I normally shoot with my top pin.  I got down from my stand and found first blood about 45 yards from where I hit her.  Knowing it was a bad shot I went and got my brother to help me out, when we got back at 7:30 we followed the trail for about 100 yards and it stoped.  No more blood, No deer, Nothing.  Thinking it was just to dark we gave up for the night and went back in the morning looked for three hours when we finally gave it up. This was my first deer I hit and couldn't find.  It will bother me for a long time

i would say thats a 5 year old deer and a very nice one at that. hope you can get him during the day. those darker horns usually mean they dont see to much sunlight. again a very nice deer and good luck

no could be a thick marsh with tree cover or just thick woods in general. if they spend plenty of time in the open they get the white/ivory colored antlers almost like bleaching them. darker antlers generally mean they travel real early morning and after dark.

i ran into a string of bad luck this morning. had a doe come in at  about 7:15 this morning. i watched her for awhile and looked around to make sure she didnt have any fawns.(there have been 3 real big does this year that have been seen alot that dont have fawns) well she comes into the food plot at about 5 yards. im roughly 22 feet in the air. the air swirls a bit and i think she caught a wiff of me and slowly started walking back up the trail but to the left. she stopped at 17 yards is what i ranged her at. her head behind a tree i decide im going to take her. i draw pin her and shoot, now i wasnt quite sure were i hit her because my bow is real fast and i have a hard time following the arrow especially with the smaller red and white vanes, and i connected she took off at a slow trot with her tail down. i waited a bit and got down out of the tree and walked over to were she was standing and found my arrow about 5 yards away with hair and what looked like chunks of meat on it. to me this wasnt a good sign i walked about 20 yards in the direction she took off in and didnt find any blood and i pulled out until 8:45. the day is starting to warm up so i have to find this deer

so my boss and i we go the long way around and on the trail we thought she would cross and  we come across the blood trail light bright blood but its a heavy trail. so we follow it up this ridge and through some buckthorns and to the spot were she must of stopped and stood there because there was alot of blood there. then to the top of the ridge we lost the blood so we circled around. and couldnt pick it up and after 3 hours we go in for lunch and as im eatting one of the guides i work with had been out squirrel hunting came in and told me about alot of fresh blood he had found. so i went with him hoping and praying it was my deer well it was her trail but no deer i track and lose it find it again mark it and try following it but the blood is getting few and far between drops, but the other spots were big spots and lots of it so i know she is still pumping it out and after awhile its 4:30pm and still cant find her and she still had not bed down. she came back towards the pond which is 200 yards southeast of were we lost the blood before. i gave up after 7 hours of looking and am leaving her over night. ill be back in the morning after her but right now my confidence that ill find her is at a alltime low. she would of been my biggest doe i would say she was pushing 165lbs. ill post a pic of my arrow tommorow

well i messed up AGAIN this morning. i was a little worried about being 22 feet in the tree with the high winds. but the morning wasnt half bad with a few gusts. 2 button bucks came in to the food plot at about 7:30am then a spike and a 6 pointer came in. the 6 pointer was being strangly aggressive towards the other deer. then 2 big does came in. i drew and shot at the first doe who was 25 yards broadside and i shot under her, she jumped a few feet and stood there so i nocked another arrow and shot again this time over her back i dont know what it is but i have been in some sort of shooting slump this year. by all means i should have 2 deer in the freezer

Well I saw a nice Doe and a fawn this evening.  Both were well within shooting range.  But I was drawn for Ripley so I'm going to pass on everything besides a monster until then.

I am new to the forum and enjoy reading the minds and stories of other bow hunters.  I Pastor a church in Rosemount and lucky for me one of our members allows me to hunt on his property in Cannon Falls.  I had an identical situation happen to me as that of Cody, I shot a doe two years ago, didn't see where my arrow hit, matter a fact I didn't even think I hit her because she casually walked away and then stopped about 20 yards later, looked back and then kept walking.
I walked over to where she was standing when I shot and found my arrow with hair and chunks of meat.  I walked in the direction she walked and where she stopped to look back there was a huge puddle of blood.  A co-worker and I followed the trail of clear light colored blood for about 100 yards and we were getting less blood as we went.  We never found her, but I saw something interesting this year while pre-scouting before the season, I saw a big doe with a scar in her midsection (it looked like a wound scar to me) casually walking eating some beans and clover and it occured to me that perhaps it is the doe I shot two years ago and she lived!  If I get another opportunity hopefully I can seal the deal this time.

I have never lost a deer yet I am shure I will some day not looking forward to it to. I was out scouting last sun. This place were i bow hunt is coverd with waterfowl hunters! I found 1 masive trail splitting in to 3. Comming out of the swamp on the other end from were all the duck hunters come in. Cant wait till 9:00 am on sat.

Went out  tonight and thought this wind would calm down but didn't. I never saw deer or even a squirel  I put out my new trail cam so we will how that goes? I did notice there is alot of corn that was flattened 10 yards from my stand  just gotta wait till they start picking corn and its game on!

Went out yesterday morning with the wife and had a fun morning.  Since I already have my one and only doe for this area I have resigned myself too waiting for some nice antlers and pulling for my wife to get her first deer.  Saw a Doe and tiny fawn (maybe 45 - 50 pounds alive) then a fork a while later.  About 7:45 saw a deer feed right to my wifes tree and then toward me.  I am wondering all this time why she did not shoot.  I asked her later after getting down and she said it was too little!  I know I would never have had that patience in my second season!!  Anyway this deer, a button buck feeds down the woods for another chunk of time untill he is 5 yards from my stand and hangs around untill 9:15.  It turns out he is the same button buck that I have seen everytime I have sat in this stand this season.  It was a ton of fun watching him and taking pictures of him for 90 minutes.  This is by far the lomgest I have watched a deer in the woods!  Good luck everyone on you up coming hunts!

This might not be a popular opinion, but I am going to give it anyway. Anybody who is wounding and missing deer the way some hunters seem to be doing should get out of the woods and into the practice mode. Practice, Practice, Practice, under all conditions you might encounter when hunting. If I had a bad shot and wounded an animal I would try to correct my shooting whether it is by bow or gun before shooting at anything else.

From the looks of it, frogee has never been hunting.  If he has been, he would know there is no way anyone can "practice under all conditions you might encounter while hunting."  I encounter something "new" just about everytime I go out.  And, that is just what keeps me going back.
Not even the best archers hit the bulls eye everytime.
