Oh man, deadeye!  That is incredibly bad luck!  I wish the Twins had as much luck squaring up the baseball these last three games as that big boy did on your arrow!  All I can say is weirder things have happened and you might get another crack at him yet.  The biggest deer I have shot was in '02 and I have not even seen one near as big since while hunting and mine was only 125" deer.  Sounds like you have one hell of a spot!  That you can be happy for!!  Good hunting the rest of the way!

I also forgot to mention that I got up early this morning and ventured out into the snow hoping to fill a doe tag or at least see a decent buck, or any deer for that matter.  Sorry to say, no dice, for me this morning.  I am starting to wonder what is up with my spots this year.  I have not been seeing deer like I have in the past and I cannot believe that the decent bucks have not been around much either.  I know the deer population is down, but I still hunt in an intensive zone!!!  I am starting to think I don't have a damn clue about hunting or something.  I try to play the wind the best I can, I go through scent eliminating detergent and spray like I own stock in their companies and still nothing.  The worse part is I don't really have any where else to hunt!  I guess all I can hope for is the season to have a spectacular ending otherwise 2009 is going to go down as a pretty weak hunting year for me!  Can someone talk me off the ledge here?  It has been so slow for me since the opener that I am starting to think being out of work for hunting is not that good of a draw.  Anyone want to employ me so I can test this theory???

Are you hunting too much?  I would hunt a day or two then take a few days off.  They will learn your habits and adjust to them, if your in there everyday the deer will not be.

I have two spots that I alternate between.  I would say on average I hunt about 3 times a week. 2 at one place and 1 at the other.  I am pretty sure my father-in-law is out to get me because I hunt in the woods behind his place and he thinks it is o.k. to walk the woods or sit in my stand any night I am not there.  It drives me nuts, but it is not my property so who am I to say anything right?

I sure did not think I would have to pull out the snow camo this early. I should be putting the short cut on the grass so the voles do not tear it up all winter. I cannot even see grass anymore. But I guess I am forced into a bowhunt instead. This global warming really sucks.

Sat out tonight.....had a real nice 10 work the edge of the swamp on the other side of the creek. I gave out a low grunt on the call, and his ears perked right up. He stood motionless for about 15 minutes, then bolted across the creek in my direction. Just before he got to the woods, he made a sharp turn to my right. What I didn't know was, there was a small 8 standing in a thicket 75 yards in front of me....that big boy chased after his  :moon: like stink on  :censored:
The 10 musta thought the 8 had grunted at him....funny  :censored: to see!

But, they never came back.

Hunterdown, never ceases to amaze me how things can work out.  Just when you think you got one, a second one runs interferrence for him.  Gotta love it.

Best I could tell, he was only in the 140 class....so prolly would have.
He never got close enough to judge mass, or how tall the brows were.

I got a pretty good chuckle out of it.....and, I was only sitting in the stand for about a 1/2 hour when I seen him. Even if I don't get a shot, I like watching um react to different noises and other deer.

On Monday, I was sitting up in my stand, I took my chaw of copenhagen out of my mouth and flipped it out on the ground. Along comes this fork horn down the trail, when he gets close to the stand...he makes a bee line for my chaw. He crept up on it, in stealth mode, got right up to it, then backed up real quick. Then he circled it, (staring at it the whole time) shook his head a few times (as to say...."that's gross") then just walked away. He had no idea that I was there...and was just funny as hell to watch.  :rotflmao:

Went out yesterday morning and saw two fork horns work their way down the sliver of woods toward me for 40 minutes.  Once they entered my clearing at about 30 yards they did a little sparing and fed righ up to me at about 10 yards.  The smaller one eventually went out into the tamaracks in the swamp and the other went up the hill to the fence line and proceeded to bed down for 2 hours in the sun.  It is kind of funny to see these little guys.  I never had any intention of shooting so I just observed.  I tried all kinds of different grunts at the bedded deer, but he never even flinched.  It obviously shows their mood needs to be right for them to respond to any calls.  Almost makes me want to go in without them and just rely on natural movements for them to come my way.  I would rather not give out my location if they are not going to respond.

I went out on Monday night and was able to take a doe about 30 min before dark :happy1:.  It was a 20 yd. broadside shot, she only ran about 40 yards and expired.  I tried for the first time a mechanical broadhead recommended to me called "grim reaper" and I got to say It made a nice size entry and exit hole in her.

Finally tagged a WI deer after 17 years!   ;DI decided to start archery hunting WI the last couple of years, but don't get out over there to often.  Always took access to my Dad's farm over there for granted, but this season he leased half of it out, so figured I better start hitting it before someone offers him enough money to take the whole place from us.  Tonight I tagged a small doe, and saw 6 deer total. Hopefully a nice Buffalo County buck soon.  I will have to remember my camera next time!

jkcmj, first, congrats on the bow kill.  Second, does your dad still control the farm? If so maybe you could convince him to "write" you in on any lease.  Maybe allow you to hunt x days during the season as agreed opon by the lessees.

Well, I hit another nice doe tonight....had really good blood for a long time till she stepped into a creek. It's real shallow.....so, I don't know if she just walked down the creek or what... but, that is where I lost the blood trail.  Spent 2 hours looking......guess I'll have to head out in the morning to look again..........

Well, I found her.........

She went down the creek for about 100 yards, jumped up on the bank and expired. The yotes got most of her. But the front shoulders where still good.

So, I guess you could say.....I got 1/2 a deer.

I didn't bother take a picture, cause nobody wants to find a deer like that.
But, that's hunting....sometimes you win some, sometimes you loose some.

Nice buck! I rattled in the phantom that I had on camera the last 2 years. He came in to about 30yds but I never had a shot due to thick brush. This happened on Friday night. I was very down having a nice one that close. Well I got my upper on opener with a great buck with the rifle. Looking forward to some late season action and some snow!
