Ah, I hunt normally the Credit River Township area, south of the cities. Got fields, just not in the right area too around Hampton/Farmington. So not many geese. Lots of ducks tho.

Cody,

I'll tell ya why in one word why that bird did'nt come down "Steel" my friend, you need to think HEVI shot,or at least "Hevi Metal" makes all the difference in the world.

Cody, start with two boxes, hevi goose, down load the coupon off "hevi shot.com" you'll get $20 back, then purchase a box or two of "hevi metal" $19.95,about the same price as the hi-end feds and winchester loads, but hevi metal gives you  a duplex load of hevi steel and a tungsenHD pellets and also give you another 10 yds of lethal range, use this load for your 1st and/or 2nd shot, follow up with hevi shot, good way to stretch the buck, hevi shot is actually a over kill on birds inside of 40yds for all three shots.

I hate steel, always have, even shootin my 10ga I would play around with bismuth and tungsen for years, that was over 10 years ago, then Environ Metals stepped into the picture with hevi shot, have'nt looked back since.

"Talk to anyone that has shot hevi shot and you'll here a story"

PS~ hevi shot "duck load" does a # on'em too, infact thats my go to load for geese and mallards out to 50plus yards in 3" duces 11/4oz loads @ 1450fps,very deadly, you don't need the large shot size like you do with steel or the horse power of the 3.5's,I do use 3.5's in B loads on occassion on the 3rd shot for decoy wary geese or pass shooting snows in the spring.

Oh nothing speical, harty hand shake, some hats and shirts, some test ammo, and some other stuff plus a decent price on ammo but we can't use the rebates  :cry:Believe me,I started using this stuff waaaay before I hooked up with hevi.

FYI,Joe's has hevi duck on sale for $19.95/box minus the rebate_= $10/box.

Im sure they have their place im not saying they dont, its just not worth it when you hunt in north dakota and there arent any problems geting consistant flocks within 30 yards. Pluss i would push somone's product too if they gave me a hat and made me feel like one of the big boys.  :toast:

Cody, just don't use a full choke with the BBB's,actually BB's might be a bit much with this load.Don't forget to send the coupon in,or I can send ya one.

Cody shoot me a PM  or contact me @ tim.peterson@hevishotprostaff.com. BTW,Hevi has another hevi duty load out for turkeys that will do a # on big geese later in the season, called "hevi13" even a denser shot/pellet than the goose loads and more payload to boot.Your mod choke is fine for BBB,even up to imp/mod,BB's,1's,2's and 3's you can use up to a full choke or .030 constriction. There are a few aftermarket choke companies that offer great chokes for different applications, much better than your factory chokes if you want better performance incase your interested, just like the guys shooting sporting clays with you,I'll bet most shoot something other than factory chokes.

well the hevi shot did its job on the geese but my only complaint is that my gun doesnt seem to like it very much its not cycling the 3rd shot, it jams, its like its to heavy for it to pop up.

Cody,I don't think its the shells, could be that your stock spring is weaking and needs replacement,or just a good cleaning,Good to here you connected,we managed two yesterday to finish the early season, seen more birds in my area as well, also seen huge flocks of pelicans migrating along with nighthawks and large flocks of robins, last day of summer folks, fall offically begins tomorrow,9/22/2009.Man,time sure flies.

Thats great Cody,so "whats your take on the ammo?" or is it you just shot well? I'm doing bacon wrapped goose kabobs tonight for the game or as my buddy calls them "buffalo turds" he adds a slice of hot peppers and cream cheese then wraps'em,good stuff.

I have had other shells not cycle properly. They were the Winchester Dry-Lok 3" specifically. A good cleaning usually does the trick.
Take a kid hunting and fishing... It'll be the best thing for generations to come.

Yeah, My Rem 870 from 1934 and new one from 08 doesn't cycle the Winchesters very well... Shoot federal and Kent. They work the smoothest for me.

Anyone have any good tips on learning the double/single reed goose calls... Mines sounds horrible.

snow i like it so far. i cut one open today and i cut a black cloud open also to compare, the black cloud BBB was bigger and the Hevi over half the shot was disformed i would say. i dont care what they look like just as long as they do what there suppose to do. besides this hevi i have never shot anything other than federals though it with no problems. a guy gave me kent last year and i did 2 cycles with it and it jammed each time i just think my gun is tempermental.
i cut up my goose breasts and fry them in different sauces and boy do they turn out good.

Red i clean it everytime i use it so its not lack of cleaning, i have to clean it real good because that synthetic outside rusts up right away if it gets wet and it drives me nuts..........

Dhunter i would buy one of the primos calls that come with the mastering the art DVD it comes with alot of great instructions with good hunting footage for both ducks and geese. that dvd helped me out alot. i blow nothing but short reeds because i sound something awful with the flutes. i just practice as im at a stop light when im at home and etc. its just practice practice practice and it dont hurt that i have about 40 geese land in my back yard and i just try to mimick what they do and thus far this year it has worked.

cody, don't worry about shot size,it all boils down to density and weight,BBB's huh? you must be shooting hevi metal, and yes you'll get different size shot in each shell, the smaller shot size is the new hevi hd material, hevi shot only comes in "B" loads or dead coyote which is a varmit load they call "T" shot no BB or BBB,and yes,the HD shot is deformed thats why they hold such a dense pattern, much like a golf ball, they fly straight unlike perfectly round lite weight steel shot.

DH,short reeds are tough at 1st but have some of the best sound, there are alot of good calls on the market today, the easiest to use/learn is a good flute, like "wind river" these calls require less back pressure and cluck/double clunk very easy, and as cody stated it helps to watch a dvd session with Zink or Tim Grounds.
