Grand Portage State Park will be open weekends only during fall construction
(Released September 14, 2009)

Grand Portage State Park in northeastern Minnesota will temporarily close Monday through Friday while work continues on the park’s new 5,800-square-foot visitor center. The center has been under construction since June 15.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 15, the park will be open weekends only. The weekday closure is likely to continue through early December.

The closure is necessary because forklifts, loaders, and other heavy equipment will be operating in the parking lot and along the paved trail to High Falls. This is the site of Minnesota’s highest waterfall and the park’s main attraction.

The park will be open for hiking, geocaching, and picnicking between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, but weekend parking will be limited to three or four cars at a time.

The new visitor center, which will double as a Minnesota Department of Transportation highway rest area, is expected to open in June 2010. It will be fully accessible and include travel information as well as an exhibit hall showcasing the culture and traditions of the Grand Portage Band of Ojibwe, on whose land the park is located.

While construction of the new visitor center is underway, occasional park closures may continue to be necessary to ensure visitor safety.

Those planning a weekday trip to Grand Portage State Park this fall or winter should call 218-475-2360 or check the Grand Portage State Park Web page to confirm when the park will be open.
