By calling I assume you me grunts.  Deer communicate all the time so I'd say go for it.  As for rattling, if you are strictly after bucks, go ahead.  I have seen many does bolt or leave the area when rattling.

I was going more for fawn bleets and doe grunts. What made me ask was up in deer camp on opener. 2 of the other guys were saying it was to erly. it would only scare them a way. Like we thought what deer dont talk to each other all year long only in the fall.

Look at it this way.... Everything has for for someone at one time or another. The second you say no or it doesnt work the next guy in line has a different opinion. I personally would use a grunt to try and get the attention of a buck I see or trying to turn him. Also could move up to a snort wheeze, what a cool call. I wouldnt say no to light rattling at this time of year. Try it, who knows....

As MNO said its opinion and mine is grunts never hurt just do not over do it. And I for one think it’s a great time to start rattling again its early season they are just sizing each other up they are not really fighting over anything yet so go lightly and be patient don’t expect them to come flying in looking for a fight

To me an early season grunt will repel does and fawns. Kinda like boy germs to a grade schooler but come late Oct./Nov. It is like prom night. Early season grunts can and sometimes will produce a dominant buck for you but will also repel small bucks. I have had no luck whatsoever with a fawn bleat other than to momentarily stop a doe.

During the Wisconsin opener this year I watched a buck grunt and kinda chase a doe for a few steps. Kept doing it. She'd just hop a little and then continue to eat. He was young and probably just practicing. I've had bucks on camera fighting and sparing already. Then on the MN opener a guy in my cousins party rattled in a 6 pt. Kept the rattling light and short like just sparing and tickling the antlers. Deer are very social and if they think deer are in the area they'll more than likely come check it out. Whatever you do in the early season keep it light and non aggressive. Can't hurt at all.
Let the small bucks walk. Don't assume the neighbors will shoot them if you don't. If you shoot him what chance does that buck have to grow......ZERO!

Rut goes by the moon and the hours of daylight in a day. Second full moon (of the fall) I believe kicks it off but I'm not sure on that. Kinda have a brain fart. The temp plays a big part in how much daytime movement you get during the rut. You'll always have deer moving during the rut but cold weather turns it up a few notches.

Big E is right, the rut is triggered mostly by daylight and hormone levels.  Watch this weeks episode of Midwest Whitetail-MN and click on the link at the end to hear a discussion about the rut.

You aren't kidding. I watched an eight point last night (half hour before dark) take four steps, sniff the ground, take another four to six steps, sniff the ground, etc.....He wasn't sniffing for racoon, he was figuring out which dames were in the area! He covered about 400 yards in a few minutes using this method.

I believe love was in the air last night where I was at! That and with the direction of the wind, he pretty much scent checked the whole hillside while covering the feeding area.

Sjohnnie is right! Midwest Whitetail has a great segment on the rut from a proffesional. If you haven't watched it It is a must! Lou Cornecelli really breaks it down. Plus it's a great show to watch anyway. The guys let you know what the deer are doing. It comes out a couple of days after the hunt so it's semi live and all Minnesota deer hunting. So check it out

Yea, I get up around 3:30 every morning to do farm chores...then off to work.

I don't think I'll be rattling yet, cause I seen a bachular group walking together on Saturday...and they never got agressive with each other. Maybe when they start chasing the does more, I'll give it a shot.
