Northern pike rule proposed for Becker County’s Sallie, Melissa lakes
(Released August 2, 2010)

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is taking public comment and holding two public meetings on a proposal that would require anglers on Sallie and Melissa lakes in Becker County to release all northern pike 24-36 inches in length.

The DNR’s proposal would eliminate the current 24-inch maximum length limit for northern pike. The limit would be replaced with experimental regulations that would allow anglers to keep one northern longer than 36 inches, while immediately releasing all northern 24-36 inches in length.

Local DNR fisheries staff will discuss the proposal and take comments from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 26, at the Minnesota State Community Technical College, 900 Highway 34 East, in Detroit Lakes.

People may also submit comments from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, at the DNR Headquarters at 500 Lafayette Road in St. Paul.

Written comments may be submitted until Friday, Oct. 8, by e-mail to James.Wolters@state.mn.us or by mail to DNR Fisheries, 14583 County Highway 19, Detroit Lakes, MN 56501. Those who wish to provide comments by phone may call 218-846-8340.
