Tettegouche State Park open house: A time to share stories, view visitor center plans
(Released November 18, 2010)

Plans for the new visitor center at Tettegouche State Park, one of Minnesota’s most popular parks, will be on display during an open house at the park on Dec. 4, from 7-8:30 p.m., according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The visitor center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2012, will feature an improved rest area for travelers, a multipurpose room for visitors, programs and meetings, and an interpretive display area where people can explore the many stories that make this park unique.

Located four and a half miles northeast of Silver Bay, the center will be a gathering place for neighboring communities and the site of year-round free public programs on outdoor recreation, nature and cultural history.

The park has outgrown its current visitor center, which accommodates 350,000 visitors each year.

Those who live and work in Tettegouche’s neighboring communities have a wealth of knowledge about the park and its unique cultural and natural history. Those willing to share a park story or information, or to donate an item that relates to Tettegouche’s past, are encouraged to attend the open house. State park staff will share these stories with future visitors in the new visitor center interpretive area.

Tettegouche has increased interpretive programming with the addition of a park naturalist, whose position is paid for with Clean Water Land and Legacy Amendment funds. As a result, the park will be offering more opportunities for local schools to take advantage of naturalist guided visits to the park and naturalist visits to the classroom.
