Wild River State Park to host candlelight walk, ski, and snowshoe event on Jan. 15
(Released January 6, 2011)

A free, family-friendly candlelight event at Wild River State Park from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, is being planned to appeal to all ages and abilities, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The festivities include live musical entertainment, ongoing activities, cookies and hot cider, a giant prairie bonfire, stargazing, the chance to win cross-country skis and boots, and miles of walking, skiing, and snowshoeing along trails illuminated by hundreds of luminaries.

Throughout the evening:

Gigi Nauer will serenade guests with her acoustic talents at the Trail Center, where refreshments and a warm fire will be available.
Bonfire will light up Amador Prairie and, sky conditions permitting, astronomy enthusiast Kenny Bahmer will offer a chance to see the winter night’s sky through high-powered telescopes.
Cookies and hot cider will be served at the Visitor Center along with more musical entertainment, ongoing activities and both indoor and outdoor fires.
Walk, snowshoe, and ski routes of varying distances will be lit to suit participants of all ability levels. Visitors can pick up detailed maps upon their arrival.
Ski and snowshoe rentals are available at the Trail Center, and can be reserved in advance by calling 651-257-0685.

If the temperature or wind-chill drops below -20 degrees, the event will be rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 22, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Although the event itself is free, a Minnesota State Parks vehicle permit is required for each vehicle entering the park. Vehicle permits can be purchased at the park at a cost of $5 for the day or $25 for a permit that provides unlimited access to all 74 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas for 12 months.

A Minnesota Ski Trail pass is also required for anyone 16 years and older who will be skiing. Ski passes ($6 or one-day or $20 for a year) can be purchased at the park on the night of the event or in advance at any business that sells hunting and fishing licenses, or by calling 651-296-6157 or toll-free 888-646-6367.

Wild River State Park is located three miles north of Minnesota Highway 95 at Almelund, halfway between Taylors Falls and North Branch. For information, call 651-583-2125.
