Mystery Cave to provide rare winter tour opportunity on Feb. 26
(Released February 10, 2011)

A rare winter tour is being offered at Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park in southeastern Minnesota on Saturday, Feb. 26.

The cave is typically closed during this time of year, but will be open for the day after several people called requesting a chance to explore the popular underground attraction during the winter. The temperature in the cave is a constant 48 degrees Fahrenheit.

One-hour cave tours will be available at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Visitors will have an opportunity to see ancient mineral deposits that are largely confined to the underground. The striking corridors and passage shapes are representative of the outstanding geology found in the caves of southeastern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for ages five through 12, and free for kids under five. A vehicle permit is also required to enter the park and can be purchased at the cave’s visitor center. Vehicle permits are $5 for one day or $25 for a 12-month permit that provides unlimited access to all 74 Minnesota state parks and recreation areas.

Call 507-352-5111 to reserve space on a tour. For directions to the park and other information, call the DNR Information Center at 651-296-6157 or toll-free at 888-646-6367 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
