As many of you know, I'm in the market for a used 90hp outboard.
Looking for one that is oil injected 1990 and newer.
I have 3000 to spend on the top end....

What are the better manufactures in your opinion and why?

Evinrude is my brand of choice.  The reason is I have never had a problem with one.

To many unknown factors involved to list them all when it comes to the purchase of anything used. History of past problems is key. Unfortunately the seller in most cases will be hesitant to give out many negative experiences he's encountered So, it's a real crap shoot.

As far as the best engine to buy who can really say? Many of the manufactures use parts that are made from competitors. Example: Power heads  Lower units.

I've had Mercury, Johnson/Evinrude & Yamaha all purchased new. I've had various problems with all of them from time to time. Obviously the main factor is how many hours logged on that used motor. If you could have someone check it out first at a marine dealer it would be worth the investment for you.

Ask the seller if the price is right if he would agree to jointly stop in and have a mechanic give it a quick check. Tell him if it's without problems you'll pay the mechanic. If not he pays the mechanic.

Yeah the only motor I would stay away from off the top of my head is a Force.  But I'm sure you already know that. ;)
