I just bought a really nice casting rod, and want to pair it with a baitcasting reel. Now I want to know all the hype between low-pro and round baitcasting reels. The main difference is personal preference, and better hand palming. But there are a few myths hanging around I wanna know the truth on. 1 - I heard from a bird that a round reel backlashes/nests less than a low-pro does. 2 - Does a low-pro really cast further than a round reel?

You will definately increase distance and accurracy with a baitcaster as opposed to a spinning reel but the distance difference between a low profile and a round reel is really no factor. If you are going to purchase one for the first time pick one that you can easily remove the spool and has alot of room to pick out the backlash. I reaffirm what HD wrote. All baitcasters beause of the nature of the beast will birdsnest on you equally.
 Take the time to practice in the yard with a practice plug so you do not waste time on the water. There are alot of backlashed rods and reels on the bottom of the lakes from temper tantums. When you get the knack and hit the water put on a 3/4 oz. kastmaster and you can toss it so far you can lose sight of it.

I disagree i fish with a couple of backlash masters in hd and little hd and can out cast them with my spinning reel any day of the week.  Plus i never have to take a time out to mess with the tangles.
However to be cool like them i did purchase a backlash matter and it works ok.

I can cast further with my spinning reel, and my favorite baitcast reel (Shimano Curado) is a low profile and very rarely do I have a backlash with it.

I can chuck a big muskie stick bait farther with my baitcaster than my spinning real, but if its a bucktail or spinner bait its the spinning real by far.  For me its which lure I'm throwing.

I have some really nice spinning AND baitcasters...... with the reels, same line & line in good condition and using the same weighted lures and the same length rods(6.5 - 7') It'd be almost a draw distance-wise, but I have two Abu-Garcia baitcasters, one is a Morrum, a slightly smaller round type caster, that you can tweek to get a bit more distance that my best spinning reel, but the best thing about those Abu's is even when influenced by a bunch of Liney's its nearly impossible to get backlash, honestly, you really have to try to nest er up.   the Morrum can be set so ya dont even have to thumb the spool almost!   With reels, you get what ya pay for, and if you are nesting often, you got the wrong reel and/or youve had waaay too many Lineys!   If yer using grandpa's ole Abu, get it worked on/gone over or put it on the mantle & retire it and get a newer one.....& ixnay on the nesting!

Now lets change the rules and we are going to cast into the wind say 10 to 20 mph.  I'll take the spinning reel in distance and accuracy all day long

 For those of you that mistakenly believe a spinning rig can travel farther than a baitcasing rig just take a look at your guides on the two differrent rods.  There lies the answer in physics.
 Notice how on a spinning reel rod the guides are extremely large closest to the reel and then taper down to a smaller diameter near the end? The reason for that is the string is coming off the reel as a cowboy would throw a riata or lasso if you will. Friction from the line banging off the guides takes alot of the energy away from the cast. A closed face rig like a zebco which uses a bait cast rod does not perform well at all because the line is coming off like a spinning reel but immediately trained out of a small aperature before it sees daylight.

  The advantages to low pro-  lighter, easier to palm.
       
   The advantages of round- bigger spool for more and heavier line.

   Backlashes will be the same and decrease with experience.

   The difference in casting distances will be negligible.  Pair either of them up with the right rod and you will be happy.
