I have to ask.....What do think is the best scope for the money?

I'm looking for a scope with a wider view, one that I can just pull up and not have to adjust for clarity. I've tried a few different ones, and have not received the results I want.

As a response, I want your opinions, not a link to some site. What do you really think? I value your opinions.

Thanks in advance,
HD

Never used a scope in MN.BUT out west I tried many. The big buck scopes are great! but vary in the optics also costly tho.The mid range and even cheep ones are of different quality!! Take 2 and use and compare both the exact same you'll see what I say. Then decide on one brand and style.2 at a time and let the store know what your doing for returns.I was lucky a gun shop in Idahosprings Colo. after I got to know the owner let me do that and sent some really bad quality ones go back. I tried 6 7 and took the best of the cheap Bushnells. It was real close to a buddies high buck Leapold
There was a rifle range on the edge of the city 2 miles from the shop.He and I were amazed at the same scopes and quality differances.Course that was mid 70s.Bet it aint changed much seeing the binoculars I have bought in the last 10 years run the same!!

Hd, not sure what you mean by not having to adjust for clarity.  You may have to set the eye relief when you mount it but it shouldn't change.  That is unless you get older and you eyes change.  I have a number of Leupold VariX II 3-9 scopes.  I never actually bought a scope as I got these from my father in law who used them for bench rest shooting.  Great thing about Leupold is the lifetime warranty.  If you ever have a problem, send it in and they fix it.  Sorry I'm not much help.

I'm looking for a wider view. When I pull up my scope, I have to keep adjusting my head position to get that "black out" area to go away. Often, I have to look down my iron sites to get an approximate on what my target is. And then try to pick it up in the scope.

Yes Dew, I remember those days of not needing a scope. But my eyes have gotten worse with age.

sounds like its yur eye relief, loosen the rings slighly, shoulder it, put ur head were u naturally hold it on the rifle and adjust the scope in or out till it clears, dont think its a scope issure but a scope possitining isuue, rings can loosen if the little nuts didnt have lock tite on them,

Just a thought.  I know these are for shotguns and I'm thinking of getting one for the wife.  But when you are shooting deer with a rifle at 20yards why not use something like this?  No need to worry about how light or dark it is out because if you can see you should be able to shoot.

I'm thinking of putting a red dot on it, very large field of view on the one that I have. But, it does not magnify anything.

Boar I think you got it! Field of view by adjusting. They do make wide angle view scopes.I had a hunting buddy who had one 3X9 and I cant recall the power?? It did give a wider field of view compared to 2 other scopes in my hunting party. The look under scope mounts work great for using open sights up close.
I wouldnt use a scope in mn cause I had the same problem =Finding the animal through the scope, The less magnification for up close the wider field of view.

And you guys are incorrect on what I am going to be using this for. I'm going to Montana next year on a speed goat hunt. I need to shoulder the firearm quick, and get the largest view possible.

I got red dot on a 22, a airrifle and crossbow. They work great till the shot gets out further,Then the dot covers the prey.course those are only for Coons, squirrels and smaller prey dang chipmunks!

The lower end Swarovski 3x9 would be the perfect scope.  They are in the $700-800 range.  Yep expensive but no where near the high end 2-3K scopes.  Modern rifles all shoot great, the better the scope the better you will shoot at long range, IMO.  I wouldn't skimp on the optics.  Goats taste great if taken care of properly BTW!

Thanks Corny, I will take a look at those. The last time I went out there, I  borrowed a rifle from my uncle. It had a Leupold on it, and wasn't impressed. We were poking shots out there 200 plus, and the range of view on that scope was narrow.

Good scope for yer needs,What Cal.will you be shootin? The retical crosshair scope, you may consider a mildot retical to compensate for estimated range even if you use a range finder.
Corney I took 2 different prongies one was sage flavor heavily (Montana) the other was just super strong flavored like esturest?Usterous?? SCENT flavored (New Mexico) both cut to roasts an steaks afer tasteing ground for mixing to decrease flavor.Long time ago!! Is that norm?

Odds are, a 270
Balistics show they are flatter shooting at long range then most.

That would have been some helpful information  :happy1:  Here I thought you were just talking about the back 40.  Good choice on the 270 if it's a semi-auto.  If not I have a 243 semi-auto, scope, and a hair trigger you are welcome to use.

Ya I was stuck in Minnesota. That 243 is a fine rifle,The 270 with cross winds an heavier bullet weight works wonders in open country. The bullet drop after sighted in at a certain distance makes for shootin bullseyes a must at distance. I'd suggest looking at balistics charts of bullet weight and bullet drop in comparison to sighted range. Then either use a mildot scope or Kentucky windage. Got lots a time to send bullets downrange an sight in.
Make that first shot count before you spook em an may take unethical shots!

i was just going off of what u described as the black out issue, from what im envisioning looking thru a scope,  not getting the whole picture,  but a ring of black then a small view of ones target. adjusting eye relief will open thaat black out, and the target will encompase the whole target view, if this not the issue, and u just want a wider view from scope,  in which case id gonwith cornys suggestions

Goat rifle season MT usually starts 3rd week of Oct.  Rut for goats is Sept.  Biggest problem with meat is often high temps. Very important to skin immediately, wash and get in big coolers with ice ASAP.  You must be prepared  to do this at kill site.I've always loved the sage flavor of backs traps and tenderloins rest ground for sage flavored sausage.   Cook antelope sausage, dice up into small pieces, cover Fluor tortilla with cream cheese sprinkle with sausage and small pices of jalapeƱo , roll up and slice...Yummy!

Boar, you still have a point that I'll consider when I purchase this new scope. I might not have worded it the best way when I posted earlier. When you pull a firearm up, you want to see what your shooting at quickly...especially when hunting goats. And instead of a dime sized view, I would rather have a silver dollar sized view (just a comparison) Some of the cheaper scopes I have purchased in the past, you still need to get it shouldered just right, or you get the blackout sides.....and would prefer to get that out of the picture.

Last time I went, we made a lot of sausage....and do recall a sage flavor.

yup,  I get it, shoulder the gun full view thru scope. I still see the eye relief issure, if you have to adjust your head closer or away from the scope, for full view of the scope, its a eye relief issue. Im sorry if you dissagree with me, Ive had scopes mounted for me and have had to adjust the scope by moving it forward or back ward as I have my gun shoulderd and am looking thru it in my shooting possition. I dont know if you have had scopes mounted for you or if youve done it your self, but scopes come with a suggested eyerelief, say 3.5 or 4 ect. the distance your eye needs to be from the scope for full view to eliminate black out. if its not eye rielf, the only other issue is a prallex issue, which is the adjustment on the big lense of the scope, if its nbot adjustable, then its eye releif. which is adjusted by move the scope forward or backward in the rings. not trying to beat a dead horse here or piss ya off, I understnad the black out issue within side of the parallex lens, a wider lense will not fix the black out issue if your eye relief is not adjusted proerly.

Nope, yur not pissing me off..I asked for your opinion.
This is a gun and a scope I have not purchased yet, and am just looking for options. Like Corny said, I have about a year to get this dialed in.

Nothing brought up about yer rifle? Does it fit you properly,Is there a cheek plate, drop at the heel.A stock has to come close to your profile so yer face aligns centered on barrel and height of barrel. It may be the fit of the rifle and not the scope.A real good gunsmith can help and measure yer fit then compare it to the rifle yer using. I'd start there then go on to expensive optics.

Yup Dew, I'll have the gun fitted for me when I decide which to purchase. And, I'm takings Boar's advice about having the scope professionally mounted just for me. With Corny's scope recommendations, I believe I have a path to follow.

All good information guys! Thanks!
