Beware of jumping worms in soil, gardening mulch :tut:

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is cautioning gardeners and anglers to be on the lookout for invasive jumping worms. These destructive worms can quickly degrade soils and damage garden plants and lawns.

Jumping worms are a relatively new invasive species in Minnesota and they are a threat to gardens and forests, said Laura Van Riper, DNR terrestrial invasive species coordinator. They make rich soil more like coffee grounds. They eat plant roots, damaging garden plants and sod.

Jumping worms are a type of earthworm that looks similar to other common earthworms such as nightcrawlers. They are called jumping worms because they wiggle intensely when disturbed and sometimes appear to be jumping. Native to Asia, jumping worms have been confirmed in limited areas of Minnesota since 2006, mainly in the Twin Cities and western suburbs and in Rochester. It's believed that they were spread throughout North America by people moving potted plants, soil, compost, mulch and fishing bait.

Jumping worms cannot be legally introduced into the environment in Minnesota and are also a poor choice for bait because they break into segments when handled.

The good news is, jumping worms are not well established in Minnesota and there are actions people can take to prevent their spread. We need gardeners and anglers to be vigilant and to contact the DNR when they think theyve found jumping worms, Van Riper said.

 :popcorn:Other steps that help:

Don't buy worms advertised as jumping worms, snake worms,Alabama jumpers or crazy worms for any purpose.
Anglers should dispose of any unwanted bait worms in the trash.
Gardeners should inspect incoming mulch or plants for jumping worms and if swapping plants with friends, wash off the soil and share the plants as bare root plants.
Recreationists should brush the mud off their boots and equipment.
To help Minnesotans identify and report jumping worms, the DNR has produced two short videos. One video features Dr. Lee Frelich, director of the University of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology, talking about how jumping worms are sometimes found in garden soils and packaged garden mulch products. Another video focuses on why jumping worms should not be purchased or used for fishing bait.

If people think they've found jumping worms, they should take high resolution photos showing the ring around the worms body in relation to its head and report jumping earthworms using www.eddmaps.org, or contact the DNR Information Center at 888-646-6367 or info.dnr@state.mn.us.

The videos and more information about jumping worms and other terrestrial invasive species are available on the DNR website.

I am very firmiliar wit da whole story :happy1:

False accusations started by the antis. La Tourell had a netting permit and was on da American side of da boarder. Environmentalists are a powerful group and have been trying fur years to get motors kicked out of the BWCA. Therefore any thing they can do to disrupt outfitters and get Prairie Portage shut down. They have been fighting fur years to disrupt usage by boaters and will stop at nothing!

I could go on and on with dis topic and back-up info..........However it don't pay ta argue and argue with dem dat aren't familiar wit da whole picture!

No arrests and No court cases have occurred....since the original trumped up accusations were assumed!   :doah:

So far a lot of false accusations by dem dat are tryin underhanded tactics!   Environmentalists wit an agenda, clout, and friends in high places.

So the charges weren't actually filed?    And I looked through the laws and if they were using seines to catch ciscoes to sell, I don't see where that is permitted.

But I'm keeping an open mind.    I guess we will see when and if there is an actual trial ore plea bargain.

But this all being a plot to shut down prairie portage seems like a stretch.

:reporter; ...EDITORIAL: Eight years of wasted government spending over catching minnows :doah:

Submitted by admin1 on Fri, 09/18/2020 - 16:04

If you’re looking for wasteful government spending, check out the story of the feds spending eight years to charge three Ely people from crossing an invisible line to harvest minnows.
In a case that dates back to 2012 and where one of the key figures has since passed away, the feds charged Bob LaTourell Jr. and his twin sisters Mindy and Missy with violating an act that was passed 120 years ago.

The only good thing to come out of this debacle is that our old friend Jim Maki was an innocent man - something he would have gladly told you if he was still here today.
What is missing from this case is the evidence. There were 1,300 dozen ciscoes (that’s 15,600 minnows by our math) that were confiscated in a raid at the Great Outdoors bait shop.

Despite the best efforts of Ely’s Jeff Anderson, who worked for Congressman Rick Nolan at the time, the ciscoes were never returned. All of this headache and heartache over minnows. :bonk:

Yeah, he's your buddy and you don't want him prosecuted.   Got it.

How do you feel about those folks coming across the invisible line down south to get jobs?
Lacey act 120 years old?   So?  Constitution is older than that.   You want to ignore that too?

Let's have the freaking trial and get it over with.   Guilty or Innocent...  Might need to move it someplace to get a decent jury.

Decent discussion?    Did the guy take the ciscoes legally?   Did he go into Canada to get them?  How far?   50 feet or half a mile?   How did he catch them?   Was his method legal in the area that he used it?

I am open minded about this case but it sure has the "locals don't have to follow the law and obey the rules" smell around it.   I would be totally happy if it turns out he was obeying the laws and the DNR was over reaching, but I have also heard excuses before.

So, do you know how he got  those ciscoes, and where?    How do you know?   Taking his word?

This smells like the Square hook case near Bema where the DNR spent thousand of dollars, ate steak and prime rib, shrimp every night for months.  They had all of the 3 real nice small cabins rented for months if not a year or two so we couldn't rent the cabins when we wanted too even if the DNR agents that rented them were not there.  They kept them reserved.  From what I remember a few tickets were issued for selling fish without a license and no tickets to this resort. Huge boondoggle.

Well, I've decided to take a risk once again dis year! Despite my unfortunate past run-ins wit da forest preserve ( "Barney Fife" ) Law officers! :police:
Last year was an absolute flop! It was da driest spring I've ever encountered. Dis year tanks ta Mudder Nature we've had some decent rain showers. I've been out on da hunt twice so far. Da first trip I managed 85 crawlers until da wedder changed ta rain mixed wit snow. Now da second time out was after da heavy rain during da night. So far I got me a total of tree hundred crawlers.

Look-in forward ta da next rain storm. I wish day would open da gates earlier in da morning before dem worms leave da pavements. Da best part of my worm collecting is dat I NEVER even have ta bend over even once to pick up dem worms. Wit da contraption dat I invented I never have bend or even touch any of da worms I gather. I got's me a bum back so dis is fast and simple.
