The roots of May Day, or International Workers Day, stretch back over a century.

A look at May Day:

HOW DID MAY DAY BEGIN?

The origins of May Day go back to a turbulent and pivotal time in U.S. labor history.

In the 1880s, unions pushing for better workplace conditions began advocating for an eight-hour workday with demonstrations and strikes nationwide. Some of the largest crowds gathered in Chicago. In May 1886, a labor rally in the city turned deadly when a bomb was thrown and police opened retaliatory fire. Several labor activists, most of them immigrants, were convicted of conspiracy to incite violence among other charges in closely watched legal proceedings. Four were hanged.

Unions later recommended that May 1 be designated to honor the workers who were charged. Chicago commemorated the site at Haymarket Square with a sculpture.

___

HOW IS THE DAY CELEBRATED?

In some countries, May Day is a public holiday. Elsewhere, it's used to commemorate workers or protest for their rights.

Demonstrations, rallies and riots have taken place globally from Cleveland to London.

In 1990, Soviet protesters heckled then-President Mikhail Gorbachev at a May Day parade on Red Square. In 2013, rallies in Asia protested low pay, the rising cost of living and deplorable working conditions. In France last year, people hurled stones and wood at Paris police, prompting them to fire tear gas.

Good afternoon all, wow what a day. 88 degrees and sunny here,  Started off at 6:00am with a 15 mile bike ride on the rails to trails, played 18 holes of golf then came home and cut the grass all in 12 hours. I think I'm going to be hurting in the morning, getting too old for these days. I hope the milkman won't be too upset in the morning I don't think I'll be there at 3:30am maybe not til 4:00. I think it's a chipped ham Sandwich for dinner a shower and off to bed. Y'all have a great week and hope there won't be too much snow up there for some of you guys.  :happy1:  Oh yeah go Pens
if you kick me when I'm down you better pray I don't get up.

Happy May Day!  Same temp outside as in my 'fridge...38*. Still waiting for the monsoon of 2"....could the wedder morjits possibly be wrong? But, there is 1" in the rain gauge from last nite. THat's enough. Stop. Got thru my friends funeral yday, lotsa old buddies there from "my shift" to say goodbye to her. One of those bittersweet times. I went with the NL#1, who was a very close friend of hers, too. Afterwards, she asked if I'd look at her mower, as it's a typical woman's mower...black oil, falling apart, sounds like an old Allis, etc. But, I was touched, her Dad passed away on Christmas day this last year, and she knows how much I was into fishing, so she gave me one of his rods and reels for fixing her mower...a Bronson 2250 baitcaster and rod. Those are kinda rare, made around '55. I was touched.  After her Dad's passing, she saw my Dad's Navy pics on the wall, come to find out they were at the Great Lakes Training Center the same year and session before they went into WWII. My Dad saw action as a corpsman, forgot what hers did. Small world.
Hoping it WARMS UP this week, because my 'mater's and peas are going in, one way or another. Have a good day guys; and Glenn, don't get tangled up in the Maypole.  ;)

Ya I would trade with ya too Bobber.  BUT I would probably be taking a nap after a few hours of swilling.  Well I just checked my lottery numbers and yes I will be going to work today.  The wife has been picking up one of those $10 bundles now and then.  It gets you into all of the weekly lotteries.  Fun to check but geez you'd think a guy would win a little more often..  Oh well you can't win if you don't play.

I've been pretty busy here...this is the last day of my working "vacation"
Most of the trees are planted, the rest will go into the ground today.
Updated my drivers license yesterday....(got yelled at for bringing a fingernail clipper into the court house)
I have an exhaust leak on my commuter car, so I picked up the new pipe yesterday and will weld it in today.
Got the 2 rider lawn mowers & the push mower ready for the season yesterday. The one rider I changed the oil and sharpened the blades, the other changed the oil but the blades had to be replaced. The push mower just needed the blade sharpened.
Till the one garden up, prolly level that out today if I have time and start plugging in my new asparagus plants.

Have a good one fellers!

First time cutting the grass today for me.  Working on skimming my walls and was doing well until I ran into some walls that still had glue pieces on it that I didn't get.  So now I've got to take care of that as well.  But Thursday am early I'm heading up to Duluth again at my brothers house.  We are going up the North Shore again all the way up to Grand Marias.  Fish the rivers north from there and spending the night there then fishing on the way back Friday the streams south from there here and there.  I've made up my mind to fish more this year.  good luck.
