Garden is in!

Put in two 4x8 garden boxes this year.  Trying the square for gardening thing. I front have a lot of great spots in my yard - as you can see, there's some afternoon shade, but it gets intense sun from sun-up until about 2:00.  I put the tomatoes and peppers on the end that sees the most sun and the lettuce and leafy veggies on the side that sees the most shade. Looks like the box closest to the street is mostly empty, but it's because most of it is dedicated to squash and zucchini.  Only one plant per 9 square feet - it will spread like wildfire once it warms up.

wow, making me feel guilty being out turkey hunting.  I haven't started working the garden yet.  I planted some stuff in pots that I move in and out. Maybe next week I will start. Gardens looking really nice.  Well, last years sure does

holy cow Thunder do those look impressive.  Your veggies should know how well they are being taken care of.  It also kind of looks like you started a cemetery in your backyard though    Hope a neighbor couple isn't missing in your area or you may be getting a visit from the PD.

Wood is 4x8 pine, non-treated.  essentially they just need to hold dirt - they will deteriorate quicker using non-treated wood, but they'll last as long as I need them too, we shouldn't be in our current house more than two more years. Also, there's varying opinion on if the treated wood leaches chemicals into the soil that are best not consumed by way of the vegetables that grow in boxes made of it.  The posts ARE treated and that's what hold them all together so they should last years. 

I'm blessed to have a retired dad who's great at woodwork and always looking for projects.  I devised a removable gate system to keep the neighborhood bunnies out and he brought it to life for me.

Knowing approximately where Thunderlund lives, he might also have a potential deer problem. They're like fleas in his neck of the woods and my butt cheeks are pinched pretty tight if I go through that area at night. Don't feel bad deadeye. I'm just getting my garden hammered out for the first time. So much annual bluegrass sod that it's been a real battle. At least it will be ready when I get an opportunity.

npe not living in town!! at least i haven't seen any, however I did see a yote this morning just out of town. I got me a little bottle of it. spray once a week!

we live in a newer neighborhood near the edge of town and there's a critter or two.  I have (or had) some rabbits that live under my garden shed which is about 20 ft away from the boxes... they've eaten flowers in our landscaping before and we see tracks in the snow from time-to-time in the winter.  I have not see deer around my house but it wouldn't surprise me-but those gates wouldnt' keep an adult deer from nibbling, they're not high enough.  High enough to keep bunnies out, though.

I just like the look of the high corner posts so we didn't cut. em.  We might put some flowers in small pots to hang off of them, or something.

This is just the first phase of the project....it already has a top designed for a green house for early planting....thinking ahead amigo....
