MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The Department of Natural Resources says it’s confirmed reports of zebra mussels in five Minnesota lakes.

The lakes now deemed infested are West Battle Lake and Otter Tail Lake in Otter Tail County; Lake Florida in Kandiyohi County, Pocket Lake in Douglas County; and a group of mine pit lakes in Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area in Crow Wing County.

Citizens first reported the invasive species in the central Minnesota lakes, and DNR officials later confirmed the findings.

While officials say every new infestation is serious, they add that it’s important to note that 98 percent of Minnesota’s lakes are not infested.

To curb the spread of the invasive species, boaters and anglers in Minnesota are required to clean watercraft after lake use, drain water plugs and dispose of unwanted bait in the garbage.
