so I drive this county road to work each day. think its cty road 14/15??????? anyway its past bob and judy's farm market and a couple potatoe farms. along that stretch there is a few corn fields, however one  field of corn it looks like they took some machine and cut the tops off. this whole  area of corn looks like it got a haircut................ flat and even all throughout the field.

I have never seen this before and right next to it the corn is normal.

anyone know why or for what reason they did this???????????

Are all the rows "tasseled"?  They usually do this for seed corn.

I tasseled corn once..............its beyond that, or they changed there method of detasseling??????????? its like they cut the corn stock in half.........completely removing the top half.

I would think its to late to detassel corn for seed. on a side note I first noticed this maybe a month ago!

glenn57,
So I was heading back from Monticello today so I decided to hang a right and swing by Bob and Judy's to see the corn cutting circles.  After traveling quite a ways and seeing nothing but bean fields, I began to think glenn57 doesn't know a bean field from a corn field.  Then just as I was about to give up, there is was, rows of corn with the top half cut clean off.  Looked like something out of a space movie.  If you look at it, you can see that every 5th row has been removed.  That was the row left to pollinate the other 4 rows.  The 4 rows were cut to prevent them from growing a tassel.  I believe they remove the pollinator row so as not to mix any seed from there into the hybrid seed in the other 4 rows.

This is picture of how the field looked prior to removing the tasseled rows.

***I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it.***

I seen this on the way to the general's house....my wife, and I,  coming from a long blood line of farmers have never seen it before. So, we asked, and yup, it's cut that way for seed production. The energy is not tranfered into the tassle, but to the cob to produce better seed. The general told me that it used to be done manual by school kids to de-tassel corn. I never did it a a kid, and assume now that they have a machine to shave off the tops.

When I was a kid, detassling corn was a common summertime money maker.  A couple of buddies and I would work for farmers walking the rows of beans and corn pulling weeds out of the rows.  The first day he was giving us a ride in the back of his pickup to the field and there were his daughters and the neighbor girls who we went to school with (probably about 8th grade) out in the field already picking weeds and they didn't have their shirts on getting a tan.  He slammed on the brakes so we didn't get a close up look and gave the girls a chance to get to the edge of the field where their shirts were.  We were all laughing and banging on the top of the cab yelling Go Go Go.  He didn't Go.....
