Got some new pans for Christmas!  I've actually never owned any.  they say their pre-seasoned, but what do you guys do?  I've heard a lot of people say you should season them yourself even if they're pre-seasoned.  Also, it says you should wash with warm soapy water... but I pan on just rinsing them with warm water and drying.  I'll never cook at a temp that won't kill all the bacteria.  Soap just seems like a no-no for a good seasoned pan.

I got my first factory seasoned Lodge fry pan this summer.  Works great.  No reason to start over.  Ideally, after rinsing it out,  heat it up and wipe with a little oil.   No big deal if you don't,  but you do need to make sure it is dry.

Congrats thunderlund on the cast iron, you'll enjoy them. I use mine at least once a week on the grill, instead of smelling up the house try your next batch of fish on the grill mmmm. I followed the directions with soapy water then seasoned, no complaints at all.

We cook everything in cast iron.
We don't do anything special with it because we use it every day. If you don't, you should wash it, dry it by heating it up and coat with light oil and store in a paper bag (At least that's what Grandma said to do) But, then if it sits for any lenght of time....I would think you would want to wash off the old oil before cooking with it.

Biggest thing is rust, is bad
Mama always said, If you ain't got noth'in nice to say, don't say noth'in at all!

That's why hamburgers made on those old griddles in taverns are so good...years of baked on seasoning. It's fact.

that's the biggest reason I asked for them.  I like burgers on the grill, but if you want a good greasy spoon burger, there's nothing best tan a burger that's been made on a good seasoned cooktop.

I'm washing my pans now and will then heat them up and apply some oil.  But I'm using the big one tonight, we just picked up our whole hog from Steve's Meat in Ellendale.  We have A LOT of Pork Producer Pork Patties to eat (not to mention other porky goods) and they're on the menu tonight.  Good way to break in a cast iron pan!

Ive got a few Cast Iron pans and pots for camping. Since I mainly use them in the fall I do reseason them every couple years except my one pan that I use to Pan Blacken walleye and catfish.  Pretty easy coat them with vegetable oil and bake them for a hour or two.  To use them for pan blackening fish put on a turkey frier on High till they get red hot, throw the fillets on with Chef Paul Purdhomme's red fish magic watch em shrink down thru the smoke and flip over for another 30 sec or so.. yum!

I used to season mine after washing with olive oil and they would get real sticky.  Then I read to use vegetable oil not olive oil.  I still use olive oil to cook though.  Then I put water in the pan and heat it up to clean the pan.  I don't use soap but the heating up with water works great.  Then put some veg oil on a paper towel and wipe the pan while still warm and let it sit.  Easy and works great.  I am by no way an expert but this system works great for me. Actually I dump the clean up water in the snow bank outside the deck and the dogs love it.....

I do pretty much the same thing, but spray my pans with pam and wipe out with a paper towel

I looked at a bunch of Lodge pans at Fleet Farm yday, and almost bought one...but gotta watch the cash. They sure have a big selection of them. I was trying to get a replacement glass lid for my favorite fry pan...not!!!! Went four places...  Fleet Farm no longer carries them, either.   :banghead:

What size?  I have amazon prime if you would like me to order it for you.   Prices all over the map, weird third party guys.    You would have to pay me for it.    ;)

Thanks, Del. Needed a 10" all glass one. Ended up buying another 10' pan with cover that fits this one, that was on sale. Just have to switch back and forth. Pisses me off no one has covers anymore. Even went to the hated Targomart, who advertised two different types...nope, "we don't carry covers". That place sucks.

btw. looks like wally world has them, and at a much better price.   Looking to see if they are in store or only online.

$20 for the 12 inch with free instore pickup, must not be stocked in the store, but ship to store is free.
10.25 is 16.   Official lodge, has metal rim and plastic knob.

I looked at walmart, target, shopko, and fleet farm, where I originally got it...nada. Prolly had some at bed, bath, and boobery, but they're so spendy. I can order one from wallace world, which I might do...my pan is a Wearever pro. Heavy duty stuff. I like it.

I'd be experimenting with chili or some things on the grill Glenn with that pot, put her to use. I have a Dutch oven that I break out now and then for long slow cooking outside.

They work great for the no-knead bread recipes...  Very simple and easy.

You can even make a bunch of dough and keep it in the refrigerator, and bake a loaf every day.

Anyone interested I can post a recipe.
