Auger questions....

Yesterday as we walked out on the lake, a younger couple was trying to start their auger. We walked past without speaking,  just a wave, and down the lake we went. After I got Mama all set up, I noticed the couple was still trying to start their auger. So, I figured I would help them out and went back and drilled them some holes.

Aftetwards talking with the guy, he had just purchased the auger, it was a Jiffy. And he was impressed with how mine started on the 2nd pull. He said he bought it because he had problems with his ion that keeps freezing up.

Anaway...my brother inlaw has a jiffy, my nephew has a jiffy and Jr's best friend has one.

They all have problems starting them...

I'm on my 3 lazer, and they always started within the first couple pulls.

Are jiffy augers always a bear to start? Just wondering....

Jiffy's seem to have more problems than all the others combined....ya, that's gonna get 'em hollering, but after working/rebuilding those things for twenty years, ya get to know 'em. A lot is user error and the crap ethanol gas they continue to dump in 'em. However, the old "white Jif's", (Model 30) with the the Tecumseh TC-3 engine are bulletproof, last-forever tanks. I still love that distinctive popa poppa noise coming across the ice...

I have no idea how old my ol faithful model 30 is, takes a licken and keeps on ticken. I agree, run the right fluids through em , I've also need been adding tron fuel additive in with the non oxy.

I have a Jiffy Legend.  One of the yellow ones.  I bought it in the late 80's I think.  I don't want to jinx myself but it starts great.  I only use primo gas with a shot of seafoam and of course the oil.  I run the fuel as low as possible at the end of the season so I can put more fresh gas in at start of the next season.  I occasionally have to spray the linkage underneath the power head so it will idle down quicker.  It gets a little sticky..   It is a 9" auger and I love it.  I want to get a propane 9" auger but have a hard time parting with my good starting Jiffy...  I must have gotten lucky..

I just remembered that when I first bought it it didn't power down like they do when drilling hard and I had to baby it.  Had a friend come along with me once and we brought a small screwdriver.  As I was augering I had him turn one of the carb screws.  Man that baby took off and sounded cool like the Jiffys do when they are under power.  Been great ever since.

After numerous sales/switchovers, tecumseh was finally sold to LTC Technologies in South Carolina, around 2010, who "assemble'the engines under the Tecumseh name, and provide parts for Tecumseh, Lauson, (which was what Tecumseh was first, lauson power products, of the 60's) and Snow King engines. (You might have one on yer snowblower; I do) You can get parts for original Tecumseh engines just about everywhere now, or thru a good mechanic. Some good places in the cities I ordered mine from.  Almost all the engines are now chinese, even some of the Briggs and Stratton. (Oh yes they are!!) Eskimo (ardisam) stopped making their engines in wisconsin around 2008, and went overseas to have them made...the "viper" engine.  some are just a lot better than others, depending on what and how the company selling them certifies the engine specs.Did you know a lot of the engines are /were chinese moped engines, adapted to cold weather  and ice auger? Ayup. That's how they weer first purchased.....

I'm not sure how long he was pulling on it because they were there before we were. It was a yellow one, and after I drilled them holes. I pulled on it a few times, got it to sputter but that was it. Brother inlaws is yellow, the other 2 are white. I didn't mess with it to much cause I wanted to fish with Mama

The only things that I didn't like about the jiffy was that they are heavy and drill slow. I run and gun most of the time, and can drill 2 holes to my brother inlaws 1 (or less)

I was surprised that this guy bought a jiffy over his ion. I thought the ion was supposed to be a good machine?

Jiffy's have always drilled slow, it's the reduction gear box they make. Get an Eskimo Z51 or their HC propane...... I guess the time to drill a hole was never that important for me, I'm out there for the day, anyway...everything is so hurry-up-and-do-it.

When I perch fish (coming soon) I drill 50 to 75 holes to chase them around the mud flat. I would be trashed if I had to drill um with a jiffy.  :fishing2:

Whoa! A swiss cheeser! You just need to shave the head on it, put in a high-dome piston, port it, and throw an expansion chamber on it!

My dad has the same yellow one like you LPS.  Cold start....open breather on gas tank, choke on, hit the primer button 2 or 3 times, 2 or 3 pulls it's running.  Drills so fast it shoots ice all over the inside of the house is what I don't like.

i used to have the jiffy propane crap slinger, i was talked.to and tried out the eskimo.hc40, for a propane style its.freekin awsome for the house. with the gear reduction like reb mention, i lower the house about half way, and this baby just micely works thru the ice at a modereate rate without throw it all.over. love for the house, now i had the opportunity to try a ion in my house this weekend, boy that thing is drills smooth and sexy! no torque like i thought, and no hang ups at the bottom of the hole,.like drilling thru a apple. i would really like one. have freimd that sold his last year, cause he said his blades dulled.all the time after 4 holes,  he was talking about sand in the ice dulling theblades, i mention that its more lime a production flaw that has changed the blade pitch. i had never heard of anyones auger goimg thru blades after 4 hole, with any kind of auger

Boar my Ion works fantastic.  I love the reverse and one scoop with the minnow bucket dipper and the hole is clean.

I also got to use the ION that Boar mentioned. It belongs to a friend that posts as "Gren", I don't think he's on this forum (yet).

Gren drilled his holes in his house with it which were about 6 holes I believe, 4 more for a house next door, 8 more for his father inlaws house, I had 2 drilled in my house with my strikemaster big volt 8"n when he popped in the door with that thing that looks like a child's pretend toy space auger... I punched 7 more holes in my house with it. I couldn't believe how smooth. Granted, I've been drilling with chipper blades for over 20 years so I'm used to a lot of rough and savage drilling with lots of power head movement, kind of a rodeo compared to this Ion.

You hit the buttons and the power comes in slow like a soft start on a VFD driven elect motor. then the thing drills so smooth with no grab... like Boar said, it was like drilling through an apple.

No hang ups at the bottom of the hole and the reverse was very nice for clearing the majority of the slush.

I won't get rid of my 23 year old 3 HP strikemaster with the 10" chipper. We've just done too much together, can't get rid of old trusty. But that strikemaster big volt can sure as hell go away any time now, I honestly do not like that auger.

I want an Ion for my ice castle
No doubt about it, that's the way to go for perm house. (In my opinion)

I have the jiffy legend 8 inch............no issues here. non-oxy gas etc like LPS. it does however like to get primed reall good.

I've heard mixed reviews since I asked the question....

The older Jiffy's seem to be good but heavy, the new jiffy I heard was good and a bit lighter.
There was a few bad years when they were switching motor manufactures.

The ION, stable, drills nice holes.....but, something about the blade freezing up?
Still to new on the market?

Nills, I've heard were great, but on the spendy side?

Have you guy's got any opinions on the new jack plate electric drill augers? The ones where you hook yur Dewalt to?

We were on probably 6" of ice and a dude had one of them drill types, looked to me it did good but then again thinner ice. I've used my jiffy in perms, the big handles suck in the corners, gotta keep the door and Windows open to clear it out. But I manly use it with the portable and pop some holes for tip ups.

My friend just bought a K Drill and we used it for the first time on 12inches of ice.  It worked great.  Down side, just my opinion, you need a 1/2 cordless drill at $300 if you don't have one.  Most people have a 3/8 cordless drill.  So the K drill costs $250 plus a $300 drill......buy the ion.  You will also want to make sure you have the T handle, or whatever it's called, attached to the drill to hold on to.

My 9" Jiffy Legend is one tough auger and it is NOT light.   I started with one of those Mark III 7 1/2" and I could walk all over the lake with it.  Very light.  Then I wanted a 10" so went to buy the Jiffy and they were out of 10" so I got the 9".  I can't go down to an 8" and 10" is even heavier so 9 is perfect for me.  I only move around with a wheeler or my sled behind my Ski Doo so I don't have to carry it much.

Just a word to the wise. Anyone owning or considering buying a Jiffy Ice Auger. As of 9/1/2016 Jiffy is no longer selling parts for their equipment. All parts are being sold thru Gardner Connell, expect to pay an additional 25% above Jiffy's  online service pricing. I looked into 2 parts yesterday, one had an estimated availability date of 9/1/2016 (no new dates available). The 2nd part was available at a 25% higher price than thru Jiffy. We have requested that we be removed from Jiffy's website and will no longer handle repair parts requests or stock their augers. Sorry for any problems this may present. my old strikemaster has the same power head as the classic 3 hp jiffys. 3 hp 2 stroke Tecumseh. Mine is old enough to have carb adjustment screws. You basically tune it like a chainsaw.

I never has too much trouble starting mine but if really cold I'd have to drill my first hole pretty much full choke, second hole maybe half choke, then after she had worked a bit you could open the choke and let r bark.

Strikmaster lazer 8 inch for me, had a jiffy the first year here.  Just a pig, heavy and had to prime,  prime, prime choke, half choke, smoked like a heaten.Then get it running with the throttle to boot.
I'm liking the Milwaukie drill, clam plate, gear reducter ,adapter  and a 8 inch lazer augur.
