you make cheese?

Saw a recipe for home made ricotta.   Looked easy, and it is eaten fresh so no aging.  Also none of the messing around that harder cheeses use.

Basically heat milk, add vinegar or lemon juice, strain.    That is where the "butter muslin" comes in.

Then of course I have to make something to use the ricotta.   Sounded like a fun little project though.

We are trying the cotton towel filter right now. And then we will double ferment what's left.  :drinking:

HD,  wonder if you ever made wine from wild cherry's?  I have two cherry trees that bear a lot of fruit.  Kind of sweet/tart ones.  good luck.

RH, funny you should say that....I have 2 cherry trees that I have been trying to get fruit from for the last decade. But, the deer seem to get 99% of the fruit before me. The plan was to try and make some at some point. But the volume of produce was never there. Even if the deer didn't get them, they never seem to produce enough fruit.

Ok, thanks.  My two trees produce heavy.  My and the birds eat most of them and I have made two pies from them.  Wine would be so interesting to make and it could be a once a year deal for me.  good luck.

I would think that cherry would go well with rubarb.

So when the plastic gloves raise their hands it means fermentation is working?  good luck.

When I was growing up and my Grandpa was alive, he used to live with us.  He had 4 or 5 currant bushes that he would pick every year and make wine from the berries. I think that was probably my first exposure to alcohol - short of my dad letting me take a sip out of his Schmidt Big Mouth every now and then.  I liked the wine better because it tasted like Kool-Aid with a bite. On the days he would bottle, he'd let me suck on the end of the siphon hose to get it flowing to the bottle.  If you think I didn't sneak a big mouthful every time, you'd be bloody wrong! ;D

Might have to try this dandelion thing. I know one thing - that homemade hooch can make for some BAD mornings the next day.
