Fisherman Pulls 200-Year-Old Flintlock Rifle Out of Lake Winnebago

What's the most interesting thing you've pulled up with your boat's anchor?

When you're out fishing, you're bound to pull up just about anything.

This guy found an incredibly unique historic artifact.

While fishing at Lake Winnebago, the Fond du Lac resident pulled up anchor and found a 47-inch-long, rusted rifle encrusted with zebra mussels.

Experts believe the flintlock rifle rested at the bottom of the lake for at least 200 years.

The rifle might be rusted with the stock mostly missing, but it's a priceless piece of American history.

The history of the rifle remains unknown, but it makes a great story, and Groff will proudly display it in his home.

How's that for a fish tale?

I was fishing a night tournament down in Ohio.  My partner rears back and sets the hook on something, and immediately calls for the net. He hauls it up to the side of the boat as I'm waiting anxiously with the net.  It breaks the surfaced, and he's hooked a slimy old jock strap! I was laughing so hard I all most fell out of the boat.  He really failed to see the humor when I asked him if he was going get it mounted, or just put it in his sock drawer for future use!  Of course by the time we got back to the weigh-in, the word had gotten around that Jerry caught the elusive jock fish.  We'd always throw $5.00 a head in the pot for the biggest non-bass fish brought in. Jerry won the pot by weighing in his catch.  I think they got a new scale pan after that.

I was fishing cats with a buddy back in a Winona slew, when I set down my new rod and reel in the bottom of the boat. (I know, I know...) Craig hollers "YER ROD!!"  Yup, there it takes off, follows right up slope of the front bow, and *KERSPLOOOSH*      :angry2:
Well, I wasn't gonna lose that one! I kept casting in the area with 1 large hook and sinker, and on about the tenth try, hooked my line. (I use gold casting line) Starting pulling REAL slow, and after 50 yds of it in boat, hit the end. It was stuck in the mud/something but good. I always double loop and double tie my line on the spool, and glad I did. After some slow, steady pulling, it came free, and was able to pull rod & reel up out of the water, covered in mud. After a tear-down and clean out, good as new. Still using it to this day.
