I can't tell you guys how much it means to me to read these great stories. These most certainly are the ties that bind us to our hunting heritage.  What a shame that so many of our family members, friends, and mentors have sadly gone on to the other side.  I always like to say, the day will come when we hunt together again.  In the mean time, to those of us lucky enough to still be here, good luck, good hunting, and stay safe.

Part of what makes those old photos so special is that there are so few of them.

Also, they look pretty much the same as our family photos too.  We all share a common experience similar memories.

After sharing my earlier post about my grandpa and our hunting traditions, I emailed my mom and asked if she had any old photos from when grandpa use to camp out in the woods with his buddies during deer season. One of my grandpas life long friend took a lot of photos over the years and gave copies to my mom just before he passed. She sent me a few this morning.

The first AND second pics in the sequence are awesome. :happy1:

I love the original Stormy Kromer in the second pic.  Never again can I give grief to urban youth for wearing their hats on sideways.  I guess there is nothing new under the sun.

Love those vintage pictures.  On my site I have some pics of way back in the 20"s and 30's of relatives of my father in laws dad's friends hunting way back then up in northern Minnesota.  These are all one of a kind pics that I got after my father in law passed away.  I found them in a suit case and put them on my site.  Took me some time.  They are in the Vintage Arrowhead page.  good luck.

When I'm able to get back out east to my Pennsylvania deer camp, it's like stepping back in time.  Very little has changed since my dad and his 4 buddies built this camp shortly after WWII.  They were all vets, all Army infantry soldiers.   We keep a log book that everyone enters in when they visit the camp.  One of my most cherished activities at camp is sitting back in the big old chair, cracking that book, and reading the entries from way back when Dad and the guys were young and vibrant.  Sadly, all these fine men are long gone now. The Olde Guarde, as we call them have all passed.  The legacy they left continues on to this day as the old camp approaches 70 years as a living, breathing deer camp.  My grandkids, Esther and Gideeon will be the first members of the 4th generation of our family to hunt out of this storied and cherished camp.

I wish I had traditions for hunting. My parents and grandparents didn't hunt. I started hunting out of need, not pleasure. But,
(I believe) I have started a new tradition with my kids enjoying the great outdoors. Everything I know about it, was self taught, and what I know, has been passed on to the next generation.

Well, this year after about 40+ years I find myself without a Deer camp to hunt in.  I hunted with the same group of guys for many years up by Walker and we had a great time together and got many nice Deer over the years. The older couple that owned the farm which I had known since childhood both passed away within two years of each other so we needed to find a new place to hunt. My best buddy who I had rifle and bow hunted with since we were teens has a cabin by Outing so we started hunting out of that for about the last 6 years where both our sons had now joined us and they did well hunting also.

He and I don't see eye to eye on Politics so over all these years we had learned just to not talk about it with each other. Last year on opening weekend which was the weekend before Midterms he had more Beers than I had ever seen him drink at Deer camp. He may have been a bit worried about how the Midterms were going to turn out?   But, he started talking and then arguing about politics which I knew was not going to end well. My son shared some of his thought which my buddy went in to a fit and told us that we could finish the weekend at his cabin but then we should part ways!
I tried to reason with him the rest of the weekend after he sobered up but I think he is just getting to set in his ways.
My son just got married a few weeks ago so he is not hunting this year and I am going to try and find somewhere to jump into the woods opening day because I have never missed an opener since I was 15 years old and I'm not about to miss being in the woods somewhere this year.
Then it's kind of rebuilding and finding some new guys to hunt with. I have some grand kids coming up but there still about 5 years out before they hit the woods.

I kind of envisioned my buddy and I sitting around a campfire drinking coffee while the kids hauled in the Deer for us when we got old.  :undecided:
Life changes, but goes on.

What a bummer Leech..  I knew a couple of guys and one was a devout Rep.  The other was Dem.  They each parked their fish houses next to each other for years and got together for awhile before heading to their own house.  They vacationed together, their wives were great friends too.  I though this was so cool.  I remember this when ever I get in a serious discussion with one of my best friends as we see things differently at times.  It takes work to make things work.  Too bad your friend gave up.

I think to some people Politics is kind of their religion, and maybe they think others are ruining their world?
