A local bar owner who knows my tastes recently wanted me to try a newish product called "blended bourbon" distilled on New Ulm. It was downright awful. He and another patron sampled it at the same time. All straight up on the rocks. We all agreed that it bad, really bad. Furthermore, who ever heard of a "blended bourbon". I can't remember the name of that swill, I'm trying to erase it from my mind.
Looked it up: Black Frost,  Wheated Blended Bourbon Whiskey.

That is what they do when they try to make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Keepers Heart distillery opened in Mpls and they are working up an Irish Whisky.  It ain't there yet so the product they sell is blended with American whisky.  Its drinkable, but I won't buy the blended product again.

I like that Rum Chateau in coffee. Another one that I usually use is Chi Chis Mexican Mudslide. It is a chocolate flavor.

I/we survived! Had something written earlier, lost internet connection & consequently the post. The Blue Coat American gin was a new experience although we thought at first it reminded us of Nolets, a 95.2 proof Dutch gin. We got that one out to test our hypothesis. We concluded that while they were not juniper berry nose forward like most British gins, the sweeter afterglow was less prominent on the Blue Coat than the Nolets which gets its sweetness from rose petal infusion. Did not see rose petals as one of the botanicals listed on Blue Coat. Conclusion: Further studies will be needed.

Ya I read that one. I'm guessing it was written by one of the guacamole toast crowd, same as the young lady at the checkout in Cashwise who thought we should check out some trendy place where we could find exotic gins in Northfield, homegrown no less. This while my bro & I were checking out with a 1.75 ltr. of Sapphire and a liter of Boodles. :doah: I'm usually gun shy on domestically distilled gins. I cringe when someone gives me a bottle of some unknown American made locally produced product. Most of them have an aftertaste reminiscent of the sour odor from a dirty sweat sock, lost in a damp, dark corner of the boys locker room for several years. I'm guessing that's part of the aging process as well as what they used to strain the gin through. Even though Kirkland is reputedly a London Dry produced in Britain, it has the same aftertaste. Guessing they used the same locker room and same sweat sock.

Blue Coat was an exception. It wouldn't be my everyday gin but we enjoyed it. For me, it falls into the same category as Nolet's or the bottle of Bath's rhubarb infused gin. Good for an occasion or those wanting to taste test something different. I usually have 6 or 7 varieties on hand. Aviation is also an American gin that's an exception and it tastes closer to the British London dry gin. Very clean and clear, not heavy. However, it's premium priced. At ~ $57 per 1.75 ltr. yesterday, I won't buy it unless I see it in a 750 for $25 - $27 or a ltr. somewhere between. Even then, I have to have a weak moment, especially when a 1.75 liter of Sapphire is on sale for $32 and a liter of Boodles is $27. The latter is rarely on sale but it's worth it. The Blue Coat checked in at ~$27 for a 750 but that came from IA where booze is typically more expensive. That's part of why my IA brother & I were doing at Cash Wise. Blue Coat wasn't available at Cash Wise but Haskell's in Faribault carries it.
